Always same old story:tired Anyway, Tyson was a beast as a champion and was a way more feared and dangerous but for the greater legacy or career, Lewis take it. Tyson destoyed his own legacy. Lewis is already in HOF of boxing but chances are thin for Tyson to make it.
Tyson was the youngest man to win a world title. Not only that, he was devastating in his prime and was considered a force or nature hell bent on bringing pain and destruction. Lewis was a great champion, and nearly unbeatable. But he often took his time to break down opponents and lost twice in quick ko fashion. Tyson's losses were from beatings over several rounds. I'd say, right now my vote goes to Tyson.
lewis will just be remembered as the guy who beat tyson... same with holyfield... tyson will be remembered foreve.... holyfield & lewis are just chapters in tysons book
Good post Widdow, I agree with what your saying in your post. If you remember, Lewis really wasnt considered much of anything until he beat a past his prime Holyfield, while he himself was in his prime in 1999. And my opinion, if it wasnt for him beating Tyson, most boxing fans might of forgot about him by now, that was the fight that put his name on the map in America. As far as legacy goes, Tyson will be remembered like all iconic figures in sports, similar to Ali, Babe Ruth, Jordan, and Tiger Woods, he was one of the few athletes that can say he was bigger than his sport at one time, something Lennox Lewis can never say.
Lewis was the recognised champ after the first Holyfield fight because everyone in the world apart from a couple of dodgy American judges knew Lennox won the fight. Maybe he did only have only 5 successful defences of the undisputed title but look at the names you just mentioned and compare those to the fighters Tyson defended against. Also whilst Lewis did get knocked out against Rahman he was never out boxed and knocked out by a b level fighter (Douglas). Greatness is not determined by how many belts you held it is determined by who you fought and how many elite fighters you beat. In that respect Lennox wins hands down by a country mile. I think when people put Francois Botha in Mike Tysons top 10 notable wins i think that says everything about Tysons competition
tyson will be held in better esteem legacy wise despite the sad stories in his career. lennox had better opponents i think and had overall better competition but it was the way tyson dispatched of his opponents that instilled fear in him. and considering the size disparity and the fear that opponents had of him, it is easier why tyson will always be feared, especially in his prime.
Also everyone says about how Tyson will be remembered better because of the way he destroyed his opposition. Well lets look at comparisons shall we. Ruddock... fought Tyson twice. First went 7 rounds and the second went the full 12. Lewis fought Ruddock a year later and blasted him out in 2. Tyson Ko'd Botha in 5. Lewis KO'd Botha in 2. Tyson had a no contest against Golota after another bout of cheating for 3 rounds... Lewis KO'd him viciously in 1 round. I know you can make the argument that Tyson did a quicker job on Bruno but please don't make the mistake in thinking Tysons wins were far more impressive because some weren't it was just the vicious manner in which he fought that leads people to believe so.
But the thing you need to take into account is. Lewis also quickly despatched of every bum put in front of him too. Every time Tyson was faced with an oponent with a bit of quality who didn't fear him he lost. Tyson had 1 way of fighting and if his oponent could make Tyson miss or stick him on the end of a jab any version of Tyson lost because the guy had no other way of fighting. The measure of greatness is not how quickly and impressively you can knock over B rate fighters. Don't get me wrong i love watching Tysons career... I've got every single 1 of his fights but if anyone seriously thinks that by knocking out the likes of Berbick, Spinks and being knocked out by Buster Douglas in his prime gives him a better legacy than Lewis who fought all the best competition around in a strong era of the Heavyweight division and beat everyone he ever faced gives Tyson a better legacy you are either an extremely patriotic American who can not look past your homeland boy being better or just plain deluded.
The Mike Tyson knocked people out more impressively so there for has a better legacy argument is the same as me saying Naseem Hamed has a better legacy than Marco Antonio Barerra.... get what i'm saying
tyson...prime tyson fights are like an event in that time, cant say that much about lewis fights... and to be the youngest hw champ ever is hard to beat....
I s'pose it depends if you enjoy watching a boxer at work or if you just want to see a brawl. Me personally living in East London i could walk out of my front door and see a brawl but to watch a technician with the size, power and speed for such a big man like Lewis was something worth watching. I loved watching Tyson fights but i also enjoyed watching Lewis. It all comes down to preference but i can't see what being better to watch has to do with having a better legacy. Legacy's are not made from being entertaining other wise Miranda would have a better legacy than Taylor
I think Tyson has the better legacy. Lennox lasted longer in someways and fought everyone, yet he had a size advantage over everyone also. But what a right hand. But Mike won his fights with speed and head movement. He cleaned out the division of pretty good guys- guys who were the top guys in the 1980s. Tucker,Tubbs,Thomas,Bonecrusher,Berbick,Biggs, Holmes, Spinks, Bruno. Those of us who were watching boxing in the 1980s know that those guys were the guys fighting and winning the titles in the early to mid 80s, and Mike cleaned out the division. My guess is Tyson comes out ahead.
OK ..I beleive if it wasnt for Tyson's Impact we wouldn't know much of Lewis's reign or should i say we'd have nothing to really compare . For example Holmes ruled for almost 10 years , but nothing stands out as trully memorabble aside from getting robbed against Spinks and getting Gored by Tyson. achievements??? Tyson destroyed Pinklon Thomas, Lewis destroyed Ruddock, Tyson destroyed several game peaking fighters , fighters some thought would/could give him trouble. Lewis ,beat several fighters , with the most respect , none of whom should have troubled him . So as much as i beleive Lewis deserves props , Tyson's legacy stands out head and shoulders above Lewis's.
Everyone knows who would win prime for prime. But Lewis has the better reume and is looked upon favourably amongst experts and fans alike for his career as a whole. Top 5 HW whereas Tyson makes people's top 10. Most would agree that 'Kid Dynamite' is the toughest fight prime for prime anyone. Sadly he couldn't keep it up, we shouldn't look at it eith rose-tinted spectacles.
