Yeah but that is just holding a title. It's not the same as holding the lineal title or being the consensus #1. And since the fight was at 168 pounds I find it hard to give credit to Leonards' LHW ranking (given that 168 and below is a separate division).

The RING was hypocritical in keeping Pacquiao the JWW lineal champ as long as they did.

He was #5 at WW by the RING after Oscar and maintained that position after beating Hatton.

Rather than relieving Pac of his lineal title at 140 when he moved up to challenge a titlist in Cotto at WW, they kept him as champ. Even when he signed on to fight Clottey, they kept him as the 140 lineal champ up until the week after that fight... They simply don't do that with other fighters. Hell, they booted Huck from the cruiserweight rankings when he moved up to HW for one fight against Povetkin when his last fight at cruiserweight was something like 4 months before the HW fight...

HOWEVER, when Pacquiao beat Cotto he was only elevated to the spot of #2 WW by most people as Margarito had just beaten Cotto and was #1 before he lost to then #3 Mosley. Therefore, you'd be hard pressed to try to tell me that Pacquiao was the #1 WW after he beat Cotto. If you feel that way, than Pac would apply to this thread. But there really isn't much of a case to be made there... With retrospect we can say Margarito is garbage and should be forgotten about, but at the time the rankings were what they were. There will be no consensus when it comes to this matter, would be my guess.

 

I thought of him earlier and had looked him up to make sure.

He held the "World MW title" of 158 pounds when he went up and beat Corbett for the Heavyweight title. So you could say that. However, it was nearly 3 years since he defended that MW title when he fought Corbett, so I don't know about saying he was definitive #1 in two divisions at once with that time span between and the fact that record keeping in the early 1890's wasn't exactly all that great.

His winning of the Light Heavyweight title was after he lost to Jeffries twice so that isn't a factor here.

To be fair though winning belts in multiple divisions means nothing compared to what it meant back then. As back then there was 1 title so you know Armstrong beat the number 1 guy in those divisions at the time whereas these days fighters move up in weight and pick out of all the belt holders the one that is most suited to their style.

 

That's why i wasn't talking about just winning belts. I'm talking about the linear/universally recognized/whateveruwannacallem championships that Mayweather won in the weightclasses i mentioned...

Been trying to explain this to the Roy Jones nuthuggers on here for years and they don't/can't understand this. They think wining the vacant WBC, WBA, IBF belts means you are THE champion. Doesn't work like that.
