My lists are just samples, not meant to be definitive, so it's open to debate who should or should not be recognized as a good opponent to hold a win over. From the lists above it looks like Dempsey has more depth in his resume (more wins are listed anyway), but some of those men might well be bums, I dont know. :D

Only if you don´t know what you are talking about.

For me it´s also Schmeling but it´s close I think. Both genuine Top20 hws, Dempsey between 12 and 15 alongside Tyson, Wills and Langford, Schmeling between 16 and 19 alongside Walcott, Patterson and Charles.

Yeah, but your mention of it gives us an excuse to view his masterpiece over the Cowboy one more time :

Even if Jack had Wills and Greb among his knockout victims, I'd go with Schmeling, merely by virtue of Louis. Joe's apologists claim he was in lousy shape for that one, but Max was also past his prime by then. During the early 1920s, there simply was no contender of that caliber climbing the ladder.

I think on wins/quality of victim alone, Schmeling ranks above Dempsey.

But looking at their records and performances overall I'd rank Dempsey the greater fighter.

Louis is such a big win it has to propel Schmeling ahead. Dempsey's is better otherwise.

Schmeling had the good win over Louis but also the loss KO in 1 and He was devastated by Baer. Dempsey had 2 rusty losses against Tunney but Gene was an experienced fighter and had the best feet and fastest hands until Ali. I know it was a different era but Louis went on to be great but what would become of him if it was Dempsey instead of Schmeling 1st time. Dempsey is highly underated on this site but he was one of the great explosive punchers but he was an electric champion in his day
