Who has Calzaghe beat to make him a top 5 fighter?

Okay, he beat a 43 year old Hopkins and barely won, Jeff Lacy an over-rated up in coming fighter who never delivered, Peter Manfredo (a contender who never delivered), and Mikkel Kessler (a guy who still lacks experience and had not yet fought a big name fighter).

Why does he get the number one or number two P4P spot? Any arguments? I want to hear a good reason (from a neutral perspective not a fans perspective) why people put him so high up in the P4P rankings. Or why is he so over hyped or over-rated?

How about you tell us your personal P4P top ten, so we can compare the type of records that you believe justify a place?

I would class myself as a moderate fan, however, to give some idea, his career did not start in 2006! His victories prior to that include champs or good contenders including Eubank, Reid, Woodhall, Sheika, Starie, Veit, Brewer and Mitchell.

These are good fighters, but which one of these fighters is an all time great or atleast a great fighter? I mentioned the guys that I thought were more noticable.

I am not a fan (want Jones to win....please), but if you're taking into account a wide berth of criteria, including logevity, it is impossible to exclude him from the 5. I have him at 3, I think.

He is very skilled, tough, very experienced, has some good wins under his belt from recent times, he's undefeated.

good post. he did beat branko sobot in a thriller and he beat who calzaghe believes to be the greatest american ever to fight jeff lacy. love the way calzaghe still uses the lacy fight as an excuse not to fight pavlik!!! ahahahhaa a already fought jeff the jab lacy so why bother with pavlik!!!!weird how calzaghe fans still try and say lacy was brilliant just joe beat the talent out of him!!! funny enough he looked a bit talentless against omar sheika to be honest before the calzaghe fight. next thing be telling pavlik fight robin reid first then we will talk.

Any fighter that fights like Joe can stay undefeated. (And I'm not talking about his style). I am talking about who he fights and when.

"Any fighter" would have remained undefeated against Mikkel Kessler and Bernard Hopkins and Geoff Lacy?

I am a big Calzaghe critic, but I do think he deserves his current pound-for-pound ranking of #3. I will explain why...

I don't buy the usual Calzaghe fan line of '20+ world title defences', as the vast majority of these were WBO title defences in Wales against mediocre opposition. Wow. Stellar achievement.

However, it must be accepted that over the last 2-3 years, Calzaghe has been better than anyone else in the world other than Pacquiao. I actually had him 2nd until JMM stopped Casa to become The Ring lightweight champion while Calzaghe is training for a joke fight.

I have him 3rd now because Lacy and Kessler were great wins. I thought Calzaghe was poor against Hopkins though. He was ineffective to the point of impotent against Hopkins's defence, he just didn't have the skill to hurt Hop at all, and the only reason he won was because a 43-year-old man didn't have the stamina/energy/workrate to compete for 12 rounds. But that doesn't change the fact Lacy and Kessler were good wins.

However, this brings me to the main reason I think Joe deserves the #3 spot. Here is The Ring top 10 pound-for-pound from 1998:

That was 10 years ago. Just now, points wins over an absurdly limited, overrated and overhyped banger (Lacy) and one admittedly quality fighter (Kessler) ARE enough to justify #3 spot because of the dearth in quality in boxing right now.

Ask yourself, would those wins be enough to have Calzaghe at no.3 10 years ago? Ahead of Evander Holyfield (coming off great wins over Tyson and Moorer), peak Felix Trinidad (he was sensational back in '98), Shane Mosley, Ricardo Lopez, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Naseem Hamed and Johnny Tapia????

    No ****ing way.
