Who has Calzaghe beat to make him a top 5 fighter?

    This belt issue does not mean anything. We have Rafael Marquez to prove it. Clestino Caballero who is a nobody is a champ and Rafael is not. Still everyone rates Rafael much higher that "the champ" in Caballero. Just a comparison and proof that belts don't necessarily mean much.

    Oh, I agree. Calzaghe is a very good fighter! But I dont rate him at top 5 like everyone else.

    Proves that Calzaghe fought nobodys back then. What great fighter did he fight before Lacy?

    I said it was a good post because it had a good opinion with a back up. That doesnt mean I agree with the whole post.

    Well, there is a case, and it is based around his level of competition, but as you admit here, it is no that bad. If you cosider wider criteria, and longevity is amongst your criteria, Joe has to be in the top five, absolutely. And you underate how hard it is to endure so many fights without losing, fighting through on your off nights, dealing with multiple different styles without dropping the decision. James Toney could not do it, for example, he lost to much worse men through lack of motivation.

    There is a huge gulf between Calzaghe's class and ability and his resume. Here we agree. But leaving him out of a top 5 is on barely justifiable, and even then it's hard to see him lower than six on any sane list.

    I know you said you had never heard of Calzaghe prior to the Lacy fight but I thought you might have bothered to go and do some research on him since then!!!

    This is not intended to be a pisstake but as I have said on numerous threads before, Calzaghe's career did not begin in 2006! Have another look, find out about some of his opponents and then try this question again.

    Dunno. At that time, maybe, maybe not. Point is, 10 years ago he wouldn't have made the top 5 on the back of 2 good wins in the past 3 years. He only reached #2 briefly because of the lack of quality around just now.

    Or even Mayweather at the time, PBF had only beaten Hernandez and Manfredy by the end of 1998 (admittedly the way he did it was very impressive).

    You throw the term "great fighter" around as though these are ten a penny and everybody should be facing them as a matter of course. What great fighter has there been in the 168lb division since RJJ vacated? A fighter not being "great" does not automatically make them a nobody. There are several levels in between including the good and the very good.
