Who has ever been as consistently excellent over a decade as Roy Jones was 1993-2003?

I wouldn't necessarily say Jones was consistently "excellent" during that time. More like he had moments of excellence (ie: vs. Toney, Hill) but more often simply being good enough to beat some rather undistinguished or mediocre opponents in lackluster fights. As has been said, I don't believe his run is on par with those of Robinson, Leonard, etc.

Good call. Louis' achievements isn't getting enough acclaim. There's a reason no othet figher ever has put together 25 consecutive defences of an undisputed title.

Bob Fitzimmons in 1889-1899 started out lost just two fights. The first was almost certainly a dive to middleweight Jim Hall, where he lost his Australian Title . The second was a DQ where he KOd Jack Sharkey with a Solar Plexus punch but was DQd. During this time, he won more than 30 fights by KO within 4 rounds including a fight which was for the World Heavyweight title against no 1 heavyweight contender Peter Maher. He KOd Fellow all time great Pound for pound star Joe Choynski in 5 rounds (police intervened), he beat another pound for pound all time great, Jack Dempsey in 13 rounds. He avenged the dive defeat by 4th round KO. He KOd all time great heavyweight champion James Corbett, Leading durable contender who went the distance witht the great Jeffries, twice (although he was DQ d for it). I cant think of anyone who was that consistently brilliant.

Some more worth a thought -

Jack McAuliffe - 1886 to 1896 - Never lost a fight including all the top contenders of the time including pound for pound greats Young Griffo and Jimmy Carroll, holding the world lightweight title through the period.

Tommy Ryan - 1891 - 1901 - Only loss was to Charles Kid McCoy. INcluded a massive amount of wins, and lengthy reigns as the Welterweight and middleweight champion.

Carlos Monzon - 1967-1977 - Undefeated including a dominant reign as middleweight champion. His three drawn fights were avenged.

Jack Johnson 1903-1913 - World Heavyweight Champion since 1908 Coloured heavyweight champion 1903-1908, Only loss was a controversial decision to Marvin Hart, all time greats fought and beaten include Langford, McVey, Jeanette, Jeffries, Fitzsimmons, Philadelphia Jack O'Brien and Stanley Ketchell.

Jack Johnson 1914-1924 - Followed this great reign with a 10 year reign where his only loss was to Giant Superheavyweight Jess Willard in a fight he was winning until getting tired and caught in the 26th round. Wins includes Jack Thompson, Tom Cowler and Frank MOran - solid contenders. Not as impressive as other reigns, but well worth mentioning considering the decade that preceded this.

    Ezzard Charles - 1941-1951

    Notables: Burley X2, Maxim 4x, Marshall 3x, Bivins 3x, Moore 3x, Elmer Ray 2x, Walcott 2x, Louis.

Redeemed his losses to Elmery Ray and Marshall not once but twice. Lost twice in 41-42 while he was slightly green. And redeemed the Bivins lost by beating him twice as well.

If you count the following year he gets Maxim, Layne, Satterfield, Wallace, too.

    Willie Pep: 1940-1950 - 151-2-1

Redeemed the one lost to Saddler too.

Hagler from 1977-87. A truly excellent run.

Do you think Chavez in that time-period exceeds Jones 93-03? Really? He had only had 1 world title fight before 1985, he had a close battle with Rocky Lockridge which he won on MD, he was seconds away from being UD'd by Meldrick Taylor in 1990, and was mastered by Whitaker in '93. Just because you like the guy doesn't mean he is the answer to every thread-question mate.

And Whitaker didn't even win a world title till about 1989, so I fail to see how he is even applicable here.

I'd have to give to Roy. He was an absolute beast. Incredible speed and power. I really wish he would of retired on top. To me there was nothing for him to prove.

    All good calls gents.

But how many of them would you not just view as viable alternatives to Jones, but actually superior over these chosen decades?

So far the consensus is that Robinson and Louis were more consistently excellent.

I think Pep is a great shout as well, and Charles. Perhaps Monzon too.

What is becoming clear though, is that Jones is pretty much unrivalled since the 70s at least, in terms of longevity coupled with consistency.
