The worst thing about being a boxing fan is the waiting for the big fights. Boxers having only 2 fights per year can be a painful wait. Which fighters have bucked the trend and crammed the defences in? Chris Eubank had some dodgy opponents, but his fights were like buses in that there is always the next one round the corner. In 1995 he signed up with Sky as part of a world tour with 8 defences lined up. Unfortunately Steve Collins derailed those plans, but 3 years later he had gone up to cruiser weight and had to brutal fights with Carl Thompson over only a couple of months. This does not happen these days.
Imagine someone these days making 11 defences in a year? You could have bum of the month for about 3 months, then a big defence, a few bum of the month fights and another big fight thereafter
They should fight more regular in general. James toney had over 20 fights in one year at the start of his career
It takes too long to build up a big fight these days and make it happen. It just isn't practical for them to fight every two months or so after a certain point. I'd enjoy it as much as the next guy, but at the same time we wouldn't be seeing fresh fighters in there putting on top notch displays the way they can with extended layoffs and time to train properly.
That's one of the reasons I like the Klitschko brothers. For one thing, they fight all of the top contenders. For another thing, you always know they have another fight coming up. It makes it entertaining to follow them. Also, it's not on Pay-Per-View, so I can just turn it on and enjoy.
Most boxers who are considered good have tons of fight early in their career, and I looked up james toney; 12 fights in exactly his first year
