I have in the ring experience, though amateur not professional. My own opinion is that Saturday's fight was one of the rare occasions in which the losing fighter could not have done anything that would have altered the result. Without going into exhaustive detail, it is as simple as: Cotto was winning when he was sticking and moving, it was when he tried to fight with his back to the ropes that he started to get broken down. I don't believe he could've done any form of endurance training that would have allowed a guy such as him who does not have great natural footspeed or athleticism, to be able to keep that up for 12 rounds against a guy with strides long enough to cut off the ring as quickly as Margarito could, or to elude a guy who can throw 130+ punches a round. If Cotto had gone the other way and competed for centre of the ring, he would've been put away earlier by a guy who was simply bigger, stronger and had far better punch resilience. The only thing that Cotto could've done differently was to adopt a Bernard Hopkins style holding-when-close tactic. I believe this would have allowed him to make it to a points decision, but even then I doubt he could've won due to Margo's increasing punch output as Cotto's decreased due to the enormous amount of energy he was expending circling the ring. The fight would have less thrilling and the crowd would maybe have boo-ed at points, but Cotto should've held when Margo got close. People criticize Hopkins for his style, but it is damn effective. That sly old fox wouldn't do it otherwise. Experience will teach Cotto that.
