Ali, for the simple fact that he was a very controversial figure, the GOAT of the HWs, and black.

lol I do hope this is not a serious question. More than 90% of people who can recognize Ali with his name and face would think Oscar De La Hoya is Latin American Academy Awards.

I think Ali was a world wide figure

De La Hoya was a big deal but not that big in my opinion

Everyone knows Ali especially what he did in his era. Can't say the same for Oscar.

For now Ali, but a generation is growing up not that into boxing who doesn't know Ali. They also barely heard of De La Hoya. For some reason though they know Tyson. They don't know the Klitschko's or Lennox Lewis or even Holyfield (they call him the guy Tyson bit) just Tyson. Pac also seems very popular among people that occasionally watch boxing, but even people that don't know boxing know Tyson. Idk why that is? What is the star factor that makes some people transcend the sport like that?

    Ali for sure.
Even people who've never seen a boxing match know who he is...

Ali said that even in Africa they were driving along dirt roads there was no electricity even. Suddenly people appeared on side of the track chanting Ali!!Ali !! Ali !!. Ali said " How on earth do these people know who I am" ??

    You think wrong.

Ali's fame is still appreciating (over 33 years after retiring), whereas DLH's has, I think, already peaked. (a little over six years)

Oscar of course, I mean go ask a bunch of random people on the street about Muhammad Ali, chances are nobody will know who you're talking about. Everyone on the other hand knows Oscar De La Hoya.

There are probably more people who'd know Ali's childhood name than those who know who ODLH is.
