I'm not sure where you're from, but I'm from the most populated state in the U.S. and he is a celebrity here... he is also extremely popular through much of the Southwest, he's popular in Puerto Rico, he's on Latin American shows all the time... Huge in Mexico as he has been accepted and embraced with all he's doing for Mexican and Latin American boxing. He's very well known and liked in the Philippines as well. He's been on the news, scandals, he's married to a latin diva who is adored by many.

Young people know about Oscar... only the die hards and old timers remember who Leanord was.

those are the names that transcended not only the sports of boxing, transcended time as well. But Ali is the king of boxing.

Just put this to the test... I asked my Mrs name me three heavy weight boxers she said : Ali, Joshua and Lennox Lewis ,,, kinda backfired .... I then asked her to name the three most boxers she knows/ever heard of she said Ali, Mayweather and Pacman. Again a bit biased due to the hype of the fight but i suggest she would have said them anyway. I then asked her who is George Foreman is and she jokingly said "the grill person" to which i said actually yeah him ... he was a boxer but she had no clue he boxed just made grills !! I also just asked the guy infront of me name me the three most famous boxers he can think of in history Ali , Lewis and Tyson were the answers .... again i asked the Foreman question he did know who Foreman was but then followed up by askin "was he any good".

Gives u a gauge about the casuals/non boxing fans perspective... both asked are in early 30's.

should have maybe asked biggest ever fights they know of maybe foreman v ali would ave come up then

Ali and its not even close. Muhammad Ali is a classroom study because he was not only an athlete, but also a politcal figure due to his stand on the Vietnam war and his Muslim faith.

This is honestly one of the stupidest questions yet on this site. Ali is infinitely more famous than Oscar. (And, I like Oscar)

It goes without saying that a great number of posters on the General Forum are agenda driven and have very little boxing knowledge.

But, it is getting to the point where I am wondering if the majority of posters in the General Forum have even a fifth grade education level.

Indeed, Foreman nearly 40 years later is still known for Zaire, let alone the "Grills" which every household has :deal

Also, people dismiss the grill fame, but the fact is, that is fame. Everybody knows about the Foreman Grill. I'm sure there might be a couple of people who don't know exactly who Foreman was before (or after) pitching culinary appliances but everybody at least knows he is a celebrity endorser of some kind (and I'd wager an overwhelming number of people at least know he's a former athlete, if not specifically a boxer, if not specifically a heavyweight champ that fought Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali) and not some inventor.

His grill fame is no less valid than, say, Mike's television appearances (the View, his own programs, HBO specials) and The Hangover. All of it exists outside the sphere of their boxing fame and is all equatable.

More people know about the Foreman Grill than have seen any of the Hangover trilogy, you can bet on that.

As for their faces, yes, Mike's is distinctive because of his tattoo, but George's is that same level of instantly recognizable. Both are cultural icons, and both some distance behind Ali whose face is still going to be almost synonymous with boxing long after we all die.

I know plenty of people who are not into boxing who have never heard of Oscar DeLa Hoya, but I've never met anyone who has never heard of Muhammad Ali.

Ali is among the most famous people of the entire twentieth century and during his peak was the most famous man in the entire world; no internet back then either. Ali is a bonafide cultural icon, not bad for a boxer.
