Ali is probably, on a global scale, and zero hyperbole involved here, more famous than DLH and his five most famous opponents (Mayweather, Pacquiao, Mosley, Chavez, and Hopkins) combined.

Ali was around at the time of boxing being televised but I think we would be talking about "Sugar" Ray Robinson as the greatest had television in boxing been around in his early days.

Oscar isn't known outside of America.
Ali is a Icon. not just a sporting icon. AN ICON.

    Greatest =/= most famous.

True in all walks of life.

Is Monroe the greatest actress to ever grace the screen (or even the greatest of her generation)? Is Justin Bieber the most talented musician around today? etc.

In the case of Ali, he just happens to be up there in the GOAT conversation (though you're right, he definitely isn't the p4p GOAT, that's Robinson with maybe a couple other names buffered in between them - and whether Ali is even the GOAT @ HW is subject to debate, with Louis making a strong claim ahead of him in the eyes of many) commensurate with his self-styled appellation of "The Greatest" and the Beatlemania like fame that he amassed.

How many movies and documentaries have been made about Oscar and how many have been made about Ali?

Ali is probably more famous for his activities outside the ring, so even if Ray Robinson was around his time Ali would still be the more famous boxer.

    :nod

...and honestly the few headlines that Robinson was inclined to make were of the unflattering variety. He would probably be looked upon in very much the same way as Mayweather - except minus the entertaining self-promotional aspect.

(the best parallel IMO would be Kobe Bryant - another supremely, undeniably, best-of-his-generation talented guy who never captured the public's hearts and minds because of his aloof nature combined with all the whisperings of consistently being a huge ******* to women in a variety of ways. I've always felt that Kobe is basically Floyd minus the charisma - or rather, Floyd is Kobe without the filter and reserved, if somewhat pretentious air of dignity...)

Ali is known by 5-7 billion people.
Oscar is known by less than 1 billion.

    Tyson
    Foreman(for his grill)
    Manny

Are more recognisable than ODLH worldwide.

Are you high? Ali is a walking memorial, a Icon all over the world and one of the most famous sportsmen in history.

Ali...he was at a time when boxing was really a household sport due to radio, hence most people around the world would a have heard of him one way or another whereas, during Oscar's time worldwide coverage was limited to PPV or cable tv...not every household has a tv at that time...

Oscar is Shaq. (coincidentally, they fought an exhibition match :blood )

    Ali is Jordan.

The fact that we're discussing this decades upon decades after Ali showed his greatness in the ring should be enough to tell us who is more famous.

Yet you would say that Floyd is more popular than Ali, IMO.
