Even lifting weights I'd favour Tyson. He's short and stocky, perfect for powerlifting, especially bench and squat

 

The power certainly lies with Tyson.

AJ would best Tyson in the gym. Tyson would sleep him violently in the ring, inside a few minutes.

 

Klitschko was in miles better shape than Holmes was and was ready for a war, he wasn't scared. And yeah Klitschko was still past his prime by quite some years. And Klitschko wasn't scared to throw against AJ.
And again Klitschko is what 7cm. taller than Holmes, and a good 20 pounds heavier. Big difference, as he and AJ was similar in both height and weight.

And i'm not disparaging against Holmes. I just gave the video and everyone can see that the guy was literally scared to throw a jab, and he barely threw anything, just trying to grab and hold. And he was manhandle Tyson in there with ease.
Even the commentators acknowledge this and calling him a shade of himself, and that he can't keep the pace, that if we are fair was a low pace, and we were still in the 4th.
And after this fight Holmes level of opposition was low. Yeah he had some matches against solid names, but he lost them all.
And yeah he wasn't KO, but i never question Mike Tyson power, did i ?

My point was that Holmes was manhandle him in the clinches with ease. I never make a point of Mike power, did i?

 

Holmes beat Mercer and ran Holyfield close years later, both guys would beat the breaks off Aj and 41 year old Wlad

Holmes doesn't have the juicy physique of Aj or Wlad, but he is better than both. Way better than Aj for sure, no comparison

Holmes could come out of retirement now and beat the guy that flattened Aj

 

That's not really an indication of his strength, more an indication as to a flaw in his technique. Tyson fought squared up, which is great if you are looking to cut off the ring on a opponent, but not so great if an opponent is looking to push you back as there's no rear foot anchored behind him like in a bladed stance.

Having said that he probably wasn't one of the strongest heavyweights, one of the fastest and most powerful for sure but not the strongest.

 

Tyson was a very strong guy, but compared to some other HWs, not so much. He was 5'10". Obviously, he doesn't have the same strength ceiling as a guy who is 6'5".

 

Anybody thinking that Tyson is stronger than the bodybuilder needs a reality check.

But there's a perception amongst some, shall we say, less educated boxing fans, that strength and power are the characteristics that will enable you to achieve greatness above all else. It's how Willard smashed Dempsey, after all.

 

Well, I would say that in the HW division (really anything 175 and up) that the stronger, harder hitting guy usually wins the fight. Pretty much every dominant HW champ has been a big hitter, or very physically strong. And the guys who lack these qualities are usually equipped with an absolute cast iron chin. Thinking Ali and Usyk.

 

Holmes wasn't particularly strong or hard hitting ...

I'm personally of the opinion that technique trumps brute force. With Tyson we had a happy convergence of force and technique. AJ is certainly stronger to my mind but with a less refined technique in the critical areas.

 

I wouldn't say it's an absolute rule, but most dominant HWs are huge hitters.

 

Holmes was "scared" cause he fought Tyson. He had never dealt with power and handspeed like that. He was overwhelmed.

People just think Mike scared guys cause he looked funny or something.

 

Oh some guys are really touchy. How about that people have different views than yours? And did i say anything else about Holmes.
Hell if someone have different opinion about the old time greats.

I never slammed Holmes or Tyson or their skills. Though for me Tyson has always been very overrated. And people loves to use the out of prime for literally everyone when he loses, whether he was in his 20, 30s, etc.

Doesn't matter in the case, it's a fact Holmes fought scared, obviously Tyson is the reason for that.
Anyway i'm through with that thread.
