Ali had one of the biggests heart in boxing history. Never got KO'ed, always got up. Thus, I don't see anybody who relies on his power defeating him. Ali has to be either outworked or outboxed.

I don't see any heavyweight outboxing him.
His kryptonite was Frazier, who kept coming for 41 brutal rounds. But Prime Ali wasn't as stationary as the version Frazier could smother at will.
Mike Tyson was a better Frazier for 2 rounds, after that he became a slugger. No way can he beat Ali. Never. Ali floats and stings him to a late TKO.

Lennox Lewis didn't convincingly beat an already past prime Holyfield, who was a blown-up cruiserweight carried by his courage in the first place. I don't see how the phlegmatic Lewis could pose a problem to the faster and bigger Ali.

Rocky Marciano has to be a joke. The guy was 5'10" and 185lbs. He was like the baby version of Sonny Liston, whom Ali made look old and slow.

Most opponents in the 60s, including Patterson and Liston, were bedazzled by what Ali did, the dancing, the speed, the movement. Joe Louis, who had his best days 20 years earlier would be just a baffled.

All in all, I don't think any ATG heavy touches Ali in his prime.
I'd seriously consider Wladimir Klitschko as giving him the biggest trouble, although I wouldn't pick Klitschko against any ATG heavy past 1970.
But Klitschko has dicipline, height and reach advantages and doesn't take any risk. Ever. He could pose a serious threat against the no-guard Ali whose style always kinda relied on him being able to reach his opponent at will. Ali himself was no big puncher, so that takes away from the glass-chinned Ukrainians biggest weakness.
Ali has never had to fight a tall, scared Jabber.

Very good post. Noticed I said "best chance" tbh I don't really see anyone beating a prime Ali. He was truly the best heayweight ever.
Also I think that Ali would have the power to probably knock wladmir down, he has underrated power in my opinion.it's the punches that you don't see coming that hurt. Power could mean nothing if it lands on your shoulder.
Mike Tyson would have a better shot against the prime Ali then a post Ali. He did not have the best chin, ( Cooper and jones) but I think the prime Ali would probably get him.
I elect the past his prime Ali to beat Tyson because of the better chin, harder punching power, and the psychology games.
All in all I don't think anyone could beat him at his absolute best.

The Joe frazier that beat Ali would have beaten any version of Ali. He had the style to fight Ali and all the motivation and hate he needed to carry him through anything to victory.

Agreed a prime Tyson creates a Nightmare for Ali, or anyother Heavyweight. Tyson in his Prime was complete , and he did have mental fortitude, he was determined and would follow intructions, The mental lapses happened after 1988, And as far as Lennox goes, he had the tools to beat ali, but he wasn't tough enough mentally, I can see Ali Clowning Lennox and stealing a lot of rounds.

Most nights a prime Frazier gives a prime Ali trouble. I know Ali may not have been at his very best the night he lost to a prime Frazier... but he wasn't missing it by much.

You're right. Frazier was too determined to lose on that night.

You've gotta be kidding about Golota and Ademek. Or holyfield. Holy always had trouble with tall jabbers

Nobody gave Norton credit for schooling Ali (2 times in my opinion) Norton had the perfect style to take apart Ali. He was like a chess player on the inside.

The Ali of 66/67 was untouchable. Its ok carrying the dope but it means zilch if you cant land so we can forget about the Tysons of this world.
To beat prime Ali would take somebody special and not just good, but reeeaaal good and at the top of their game. Someone who fights his own fight and does so for 3 full minutes of every round, and is capable of doing it in the championship rounds. Theres a case to be made of styles too, as they make fights. So going by that,IMO prime frazier and maybe prime Holmes. Forget the rest.
