    I have recently been introducing my brother to some of the classic fights as he is a long time casual fan and is slowly turning into a more hardcore boxing fanatic. he asks me for era's such as 70's and 80's and so i gave him the Ali/Frazier/Foreman/liston fights and in the last few weeks Hagler/Hearns/Duran/Leonard fights and he is completely taken with Sugar Ray Leonard.

    He asked me if i thought Leonard was surely one of the greatest of all time based on his wins over Hagler/Hearns and Duran and also asked to check out which boxers had 3 such high class or better wins on their resume. I told him i would have Leonard top ten but there were better fighters such as SRR and Harry Greb with superb resumes but he asked me to come on here and ask some of the experts on the classic forum.

    This weekend he'll be going back to the 50's with SRR and I'm trying to track down some Henry Armstrong fights for him to give him a better perspective on ATG top ten fighters.

    So my question is who has the best 3 wins in the history of the sport?

    How about Leonard?

    Unbeaten Benitez, Duran, Hagler.

    But my pick is Charles.

    1 - Prime Charley Burley at 160, whilst green!

    2 - Prime Archie Moore at 175 - that's the all time #2 LHW on my list.

    3 - Jersey Joe Walcott, all time top 20 lock, top 15 on my list, Heavyweight.

    Good pick and you could add Jimmy Bivens to his list, Bivens himself holds wins over Archie Moore, Charlie Burley and Ezzard Charles.

    Probably Greb vs. Tunney, Walker and Loughran/Mike Gibbons

    Though Ray's Duran, Hearns, Hagler looks better on paper.

    What about Calzaghe?

    Lacey Kessler and Reid? I think this one holds the advantage as you can swap at any time Lacey and Reid for Jones jr and Hopkins, or Lacey for Eubank.

    Thread over.

    What do you guys think about Jimmy McLarnin.
    Wins over Tony Canzoneri, Barney Ross, Young Corbett III a past prime Benny Leonard and he finished Pancho Villa (if the story in his book is true) Permanently. how do these wins hold up

    Ninebar, he was one of the best stacked with quality resumes ever. And that resume coincides with a great legacy (if you give weight to that kind of thing), such as the brilliant trilogy with Ross.

    By the way, if you haven't seen their thrd battle i recommend it big time.

    I have to go with Duran here. Leonard and Barkley. There's a long way down to his third best (Cuevas?, Buchanan?), but those two just by themselves might just be the best two wins in boxing history.

    Mcgrain..let me play devil's advocate here for a minute....I dont think Charles faced a prime Archie Moore until there last fight(3rd one in 1948) and even then I still think archie was still developing and really did not reach his best until around 1951 or 1952. I have film of archie all the way back through 1940, and have read numerous articles and what not, and I am convinced Archie Moores prime was the early 1950's. Still a great win for Ezz though.

    Here is another one. If you believe Walcotts prime lasted all the way through when he won the championship to the marciano defense in 1952, then charles gets full credit, but if you believe Walcotts prime was the Joe Louis fights, then perhaps charles did not beat the best version of Walcott. Again, I have all of Walcotts fights on film and newspaper reads, I do believe charles beat a prime Walcott. But if your one of those guys who believes the Walcott of the Louis fights was the best Walcott, then charles did not beat that version of Jersey Joe.

    Well if we are looking for fights when the opponent was at or reasonably near his prime as opposed to a shell ,I would say it is between
    SRL. = Duran,Hearns ,Hagler,sub Benitez.
    Greb. = Walker,Loughran,Tunney.
    Ali. = Liston,Frazier,Foreman.
    Who you pick would, I suppose depend on how near their respective primes the victims were,and where you rate them in the scheme of things.
    I dont think I would be inclined to argue with any pick myself.

    Wins over past prime or still improving opponents would probably let Jack Johnson , and Jim Jeffries into the frame.
    Johnson.= Fitz,Langford,Jeffries,Jeanette.
    Jeffries. = Jackson,Fitz,Corbett,Sharkey.
    I dont think you can compare the two lists really, just included them for the sake of argument.
    EG.Jack Sharkey.= Wills,Godfrey,Schmeling.

    At the moment I'm siding with Leonard because the 3 wins were over a top 10, a top 20 (arguably) and a top 30 (arguably) ATG and all pretty close to prime. I have Duran top 10, Hagler top 20 and Hearns top 30 although some may not rate Hagler and Hearns so highly.
