No he didnt. Calzaghe had to face the winner of the Sheika/Johnson fight, where the winner was to be his mandatory, but Johnson lost and sheika won. Johnson was a SMW journeyman and not once in the top 10 when Calzaghe was champ They would have fought in 2004 if Johnson had waited instead of fighting Jones. Johnson told Dan Goosen to forget about Joe. Yet he came running back to Calzaghe when Joe became a superstar after whooping Lacy. BBC Tuesday, 8 June, 2004 But Johnson is adamant Calzaghe has lost his chance, saying: "The fight is off. I'm not interested in fighting Joe Calzaghe any more.Johnson refused to wait for the fight to be rescheduled on 04,fact. Calzaghe agreed to fight Johnson in September 06 on the condition that Johnson beat Woods in their 3rd fight. However Johnson lost and missed his chance. Calzaghe was ringside for this fight - some scared ducker hey. Why do people leave out this information when discussing this issue? and I have a hard time believing Calzaghe would duck an old journeyman like Johnson to fight a younger, much more dangerous Mikkel Kessler!!! and yes Calzaghe WAS injury prone. he was notorious for hand problems.....Many of his fights including Lacy had to be rescheduled. He still ended up fighting them. He wanted to reschedule the Johnson fight but like i saidJ ohnson said he was "done" with Calzaghe. everybody was beating johnson before he popped up on the hbo screen and knockout over HBO fighter jones jr also not once throughout calzaghes reign was johnson ranked in the ringmag top 10!! Lets not forget also that Sheika fight had to be rescheduled 3 times I believe
Tyson-Spinks? How does that equate? Calzaghe now would not be anywhere near Ward's best win. I doubt anyone would take it seriously. Guys fighting in their 40's is not the norm. Coming back in your 40s after 5 years; even less so. A guy such as Ward taking on an unretired Calzaghe would be pointless at this point. 3 years ago, right after the S6 it might have been taken seriously, but not now. Who and when was the last world class opponent Eubank beat before Calzaghe? He was a last minute stand in for a title fight. He was training for a fight at a higher weight and dropped down to grab a title shot a week before the fight. Simply, he wasn't a player at SMW anymore. Ok, so he held his own at CW. Rocks in his socks and all that. That helps make it a decent win as opposed to not. There can be no illusions as to that being a prime, or close to it, Chris Eubank.
Spinks was the HW champ. He went into the fight on the top of his HW game, for what it's worth. Had Spinx gone on and beaten a Bruno or Carl Williams or Razor, it would have made the win somewhat bigger. One doesn't equate to the other anyway. They were different circumstances. But Kessler went on to beat a world class opponent at SMW after. Nobody thought Kessler was done at that point. It's not about how much he had done previously. The guy is one of the great SMW of all time, but he was obviously on decline. He lost to Collins 2x, beat 2 no hopers, lost to Calzaghe on short notice, then moved up to fight at CW. Does that sound like a guy who's at his best? Him losing when he isn't at his best doesn't take away from anything he did beforehand. That is a fair and apt example. I'd say both were on a similar level of decline. Not shot, but nowhere near prime. Young Calzaghe gets the credit for beating a grizzled and battle worn Eubank. He doesn't get credit for beating prime Eubank, same as if someone like J'Leon Love were to go out now and beat Kessler now. It'd be a good solid win for a young fighter. A jumping off point, if you will. I can't say I remember Thompson's punching power. I also can't say that because he had good punching power that that in itself is enough to show that Eubank competing with him at CW makes Eubank a great win at SMW at the end of his career. I don't see how it relates.
well joe musta got scared when he saw glen destroy shot jones., understandably he ran like a gibbering cowardzaghe. remember that joe had to keep his zero back in the days before stepping up with Kessler his last fight, otherwise his record was largely worthless and domestic level.
Bunch of ungrateful ****s. I always thought his brother Riath was shifty. Ingle always came across as a good guy IMO and his motives for doing what he did were genuine and commendable. Same here. I watched it round an Irish fella's house who hated Naz as much as I did. We were both grinning from ear to ear watching him get his long overdue comeuppance. Maybe because he was such a gracious and humble fella? lol That's a tough one. That's a good call though. Robinson had been on a real good run of wins and Naz just took him apart in front of his home crowd. It was painful to watch actually. I felt bad for Robinson getting taken apart like that. It was like watching a cat torturing a mouse for ages for its own amusement until it got bored and finally decided to put an end to its misery. He was good against Tom Johnson and Kelly too, especially the later as it was his first fight over in the US on a stage of that magnitude. Obviously it nearly went pear shaped though. I liked quite a few of his other performances against lesser opponents too - some real vicious KOs. I'm seriously tempted to go to town on the Eubank was ''shot, weight-drained, a walking corpse when he fought Calzaghe'' posts here. lol :good
If you are interpreting my posts as to mean that, I assure you that isn't the case. There is a wide gulf between being a prime fighter at the top of his game and being a battle worn fighter taking a fight on short notice. You can see in the fight the guy had something left in his tank, but couldn't cope with what Calzaghe brought to the table. There is an equally wide gulf between being faded and battle worn and being a shot, weight drained walking corpse. I'm not one who tends to go to extremes.
