Simple question, simple poll. McGrain can't decide.

I might say George on first thought, but you'd probably have to say that both had good chins apart from the odd pockmark/anomaly that might suggest otherwise, ie the 'phantom punch' and Martin KO for Liston and the Ali KO and Lyle/Young knockdowns for Foreman. It might comes down to which of the two you think generally faced the bigger hitters.

    Foreman, without much hesitation.

Feel free to bring up each mentally caving and becoming more vulnerable. Foreman mentally unsure of himself against Lyle and Liston both times against Ali. :good

I have them about equal, not an awful lot in it. Lyle battered Foreman around a little bit and he was KO'd by Ali also. He was dropped by young.

Foreman has the KO loss to Ali also, but I believe this to be a dive. He was knocked cold way past his prime by Martin, and suffered a slip/KD early in his career that seems a bit of a mystery.

Liston visited the canvas less, but was probably tested by less punchers. I'd expect them both to eat most big shots assuming they were training hard and in their best years. I'll eschew from voting in the poll.

Liston took bombs of huge punchers Williams, Valdes, and DeJohn. The one big puncher foreman fought in his prime, Lyle, put him down twice. I don't know if foreman's chin got better with age, but liston had the more proven chin if you count foreman's career up until 1977. The knockdown against Ali liston suffered is far too controversial to determine if it was legit or not.

This is the difficulty with Foreman when trying to break down his individual attributes. He has two very distinct and different careers.

It's important to note that Foreman took a vicious left hook against Frazier. So let's not try spreading some myth that he didn't face big punchers or get hit cleanly in his first career. Lyle hit him with such vicious shots and was the only one to legitimately test his chin. Foreman was dead tired by round 5 in Zaire it's no wonder that Ali's combination had him reeling. He got at 9 as well if you actually look at the tape. The Jimmy Young knockdown was a knockdown of barely a second.

Yes, it's true Foreman got bigger and much more relaxed in his second career which helped his chin. I think it further confirms though Lyle as a puncher. He took flush bombs from Morrison without flinching. He took 20 consecutive shots from Holyfield. A devastating left hook from Cooney, and shots from Briggs. The man chin is far more proven at the end of the day.

We also have to factor in that Liston has better defensive. Foreman's offense was largely his defense. You're going to get hit when you're a bit more open (Although Foreman could pick of your jab well. That's why Ali was keen in the straight right in Zaire).

Foreman got knocked down and out by Ali from a real punch. Liston did not.

He wasn't out. You can't be out and get up at 9. Liston I think got legitimately dropped and maybe a little stunned. To what extent he faked, dove, or what not is not truly understood. I still think there's enough to show Foreman had the better chin. Liston was hurt by Ali in the first fight and reeling back at one point. Foreman always moved forward and never really got stunned. And Ali hit harder at this point in his career.

He doesn't neccessarily KO you with one shot but he can really hurt you one shot.

Foster was down and hurt but it was one shot that had him out. If that counts.

But many could testify to feeling the power of Frazier's left hook. Ellis, Quarry, Foster, to name a few. Quarry in the second fight got rattled by even his right.
