Who has the better LHW resume? Zsolt Erdei or Bernard Hopkins Erdei beat Gonzalez WBO and arguably Lineal champ undefeated Garay twice who became WBA LHW champ Sahnoune former WBA LHW champ Ulrich who became European LHW champ Hopkins beat Tarver arguably Lineal champ who went on to become IBF LHW champ Wright (no LHW resume to note) Pavlik (no LHW resume to note) Pascal WBC and Lineal champ Both have other wins at the weight, but I dont think too many people would rate them, even though I think both have had some other good wins at the weight . Whos do you rate higher and why?
Hi Bailey, I think Hopkins wins over Tarver and Pascal, which arguably made him the lineal champ twice gives him the edge in this discussion. Erdei is underrated for sure though. Wright and Pascal clearly aren't strong at LHW
erdei's a good fighter but I feel like hopkins fought the better quality of opposition, and although pavlik and wright had no lhw achievements, benard hopkins outclassed them so thoroughly that it's academic.
I think the Pascal win was very good, but alot of that is due to Hopkins age as to why I was so impressed. On paper I had that fight a draw (Hopkins/Pascal 2), but felt Hopkins was an overall winner going with the feel of that fight. Tarver was a good win for Hopkins but dont forget that Gonzalez had ended the fantastic undefeated run of 2 weight world champ Michalczewski just before and had a win over Johnson who had split 2 fights with Tarver
Do you not think beating Gonzalez who had just beaten Michalczewski was defining? Or when Erdei gave away around 17lbs at the weigh in and beat the WBC CW champ defining?
Good points, however it's fair to say Michaelczewski was somewhat past his prime when he faced Gonzalez. Gonzalez also lost to Clinton Woods who I don't rate highly. Hopkins being a two time lineal champion stands out for me, and his win over Tarver was impressive, Tarver went on to win an IBO LHW and IBO Cruiserweight title since then. Erdei's win over Fragomeni is a good win, considering Fragomeni pushed David Haye hard.
If you're looking for one, then Gonzalez is who you'd have to pick. Maybe it's passable from a purists view who has extensive knowlege on Boxer's who aren't just from what I'd call dominant nations. (Forgive the arrogance but both you and me are inthis category, along with about 10 others.) Boxing is a sport, but it's also a way of telling a story. History favours those who've told a story with their careers, and Eredi has never had a defining chapter, not one that the masses would care to read at any rate. (Again, forgive the book metaphor, I've had a long week!)
Erdei looked like **** against garay. I say hopkins by far. By my cards he's beaten tarver (better than any lhw victory of erdei's) wright, kelly, joe, jones, pascal (x2) and lost only to dawson.
I dont think Erdei looked bad against Garay but it was 2 tough fights with a figher who went on to become a LHW champ. Some feel Hopkins lost to Wright, and Pascal twice
I was too young to bet, but I got my Dad to stick £10 on the draw in that one, it's the only time I've ever looked at two fighters and thought that it has to be a draw. Well Pacquaio and Marquez too I guess.
