Yawn ! Yet still managed to become undisputed lt HW champ ! just deal with it ! none of the boxers in your neck of the woods could ever dominate like Roy ! and unless you have proof that he was dirty in the Hill your point has no credibility!:hi:

Ability is often overplayed when reviewing resumes. When evaluating a fighter's resume (as opposed to their "greatness") it should be a lot more about who they beat rather than how they beat them.

H2H Jones is obviously the best fighter on the list, although he clearly peaked at 168. However, his resume isn't significantly different from Michalczewski's, and it's not the no-brainer that some people make it out to be. The strong belief that Jones would have dominated him H2H is completely irrelevant when looking at a resume, which has to be based on what actually happened in the ring.

They both beat many of the same names (Hill, Griffin, Hall, Harmon). There's probably a bit more quality on Jones' record (Tarver, Johnson, Harding), but Rocchigiani (second time round) and Barber are quality wins that are often overlooked. Michalczewski beat a fresher Hill, but the reverse can be applied to the fighters Jones got to first.

Ultimately Gonzalez is probably the clincher, as Jones dominated the guy who took Michalczewski's "0". However, even that isn't decisive, as Dariusz was clearly a declining force by that point and not the fighter who had dominated Hill. If you're going to discount Jones' later mishaps (which I personally do), you have to cut Michalczewski some slack for losing to an inferior fighter.

There's a gap to the others, and it becomes very subjective - Tarver and Johnson's resumes are mainly built on the wins over Jones and each other, so a lot of it depends on how far gone you think Jones was at the time. With Erdei, a lot if depends on how good you think Gonzalez was.

I'd go with what appears to be the consensus:

    Jones
    Dariusz
    Hopkins
    Tarver
    Johnson
    Erdei

However, the last 4 slots are a moveable feast depending on what you class as the primes of their victims.

We all know that your a secret Jones fanboy Electric.

Roy fought Hill in his 4th fight at 175 in 1998. The reason he didn't go near him before, is because they were fighting in DIFFERENT weight classes. :good

Perhaps the Jones' camp caught wind that Hall was going to be roided to his eyeballs and Jones decided to even the playing field?

That has just as much credibility as your hunch that he was roided for Hill.

Jones and DM have some common names, but Jones beat them vastly better than DM did, for the most part. You have to consider how they won as well. Some of you guys seem to not be doing this. Tarver is a great name, he beat some of the same guys Jones beat, arguably beat Johnson twice as well. Further more, Jones victory towards Tarver means a lot more than some people give credit, he came down from heavy, losing all that weight, to win the title again. That says a lot.

I don't hold Jones losses against him at LH as much, do to how he looked in the Tarver fight. He was obviously past prime to the degree that he did not look like his old self, after the victory he said that he was going to retire if he couldnt get the mike tyson fight he dreamed of. Jones had been on a decline as early as 2002 or late 2001, this is when he started to take breaks on the ropes. After the KO loss to Tarver, I give Jones the benefit of the doubt, but this loss do have some credibility, even if the KO loss was due to Jones loss of reflexes, after that he was a completely shot fighter and went on to get KO'd everytime he stepped up against a world class fighter, fighters he would have destroyed in his prime.

Besides that, to illustrate their victories over common opponents, lets consider Richard hall and Hill fights. DM beats Hill, who had some success, but loss a unanimous decision to DM, whereas RJJ KO'd him with a body shot in the 4th or 5th round, I believe. And this wasnt a shot or bad Hill, he was giving a good account of himself. With Hall, DM went life and death with him (some had Hall winning the first fight, which is why there was a rematch, which he still went life and death with him), where as RJJ completely destroyed him, out classed him, and punished him KOing him -- that fight could've been stopped way earlier. Now you could mention how Jones struggled with Montel Griffin in their first fight, but DM TKO 4 Griffin in their only meeting. But Griffin was not as fresh as he was against Jones, where I would say he was in his absolute prime. And in the fight with DM, Griffin, was winning the fight, despite the German score cards, and the stoppage in the 4th was extra quick and dodgy, a typical German stoppage. Jones in a rematch KO'd Montel in the 1st round.

The only common opponent that DM may have got the better of than Jones, was Harmon, I haven't seen his fight with Harmon,so I don't know how Harmon really looked against him, could watch it on youtube, but I don't want to. But the Harmon Jones fought was never in the fight, didn't land anything, and pretty much covered up the whole time.

The fighters they don't have in common, JONES > DM's (Tarver, R.Johnson, Woods, Gonazeles) and the fighters they do have in common Jones> DM in terms of dominance and performance.

This is an excellent breakdown! I give Anyone who beat Jones after his Ruiz fight very little credit. I thought he lost to Tarver in the first fight (a fighter he would have blown away only a couple of years earlier. Then the back to back KO losses to Tarver and Johnson told me that Jones should have called it a day.

I never ever like Roy, i remember hoping that Ruiz (who was the least favourite HW champ in history) would Knock him the **** out. However, you have to give the guy his due . . . He was untouchable in his prime and would have beat any fighter between 160-175 with ease.

ranking DM above hopkins is laughable - nobody will remember a fighter who failed to cross the pond because that's where reputations are made

So you dont rate Hopkins for beating Pascal and beating undefeated world champ Cloud. or Erdei beating undefeated future WBA LHW champ Garay?
why do you rate Jones win over Griffin? What had Griffin done other than beat Toney coming off a loss who wasnt good at LHW

Lets also not forget that Hill was coming off a loss to Michalczewski

Look at KO Artists comments about the level Hopkins was fighting at, at LHW compared to Jones.
    We are talking LHW now.
What was Jones best win at LHW?
Griffin who had no top wins at LHW
Hill who DM had already beaten
    Johnson maybe
Gonzalez who Erdei beat when coming off his best win
    Tarver who Hopkins beat clearer

DM beat Hill when on his best run, Barber, Rocchgiani
Hill was a fantastic LHW, who I was tempted to put on.
Here is an old thread I did about Hill

I was going to say that none of the others have been beaten by 3 of the other fighters on the list, but tha would be wrong as Tarver also lost to 3 of the other fighters on that list.
I guess Jones, Tarver and Johnson are of a similar :think and at LHW

Great post Momus. I think the thing that isnt mentioned is where there were question marks surrounding Jones win over Hall, and if Jones had something he shouldnt in his system

4th fight, which means he could have fought him in his 1st, 2nd or 3rd previously at LHW

did Jones, Hopkins or Tarver cross the pond? No.
DM was the champ, not Jones and Jones didnt cross the pond and take the test. Credit should be given to G Johnson for at least attempting to cross the pond to take on tougher comp what at SMW, not that, that counts when talking LHW, but Johnson showed he had a bigger set by being willing to cross the pond

Was it in an important world title fight or just a building fight?
N Cleverly fought on the Calzaghe/Hopkins undercard, but that doesnt mean anything as it was just a building fight
