who will be able to compete on more even terms with the greats in and around their weight classes Golovkin or Kovalev?

Kovalev is bigger and taller and I think can more readily compete with the Wards and Hopkins's of the world on a physical level.

should Kovalev rip through Cleverly, in comparison Kovalev would have better scalps on his resume than GGG. Still whats Kovalevs punch resistance? the jury is still out on that one.

    thoughts, opinions???????

Kovalev. Nobody from SMW or LHW would beat him. He could also rule cruiser if he wanted to move up.

Kovalev wouldn't lay a glove on Ward.

Tough call as both are so talented.

That said, Kovalev will likely have his best moments at 175 and there are really only 2 legacy defining fights to be made at this weight right now...Hopkins and Stevenson. This fact alone will limit his upside when compared to Gennady.

Golovkin, on the other hand, has stated that he is willing to move up or down a division to face the best. This means that we could see possible matchups against Froch, Chavez Jr., Ward, Martinez and maybe even Money. My point is that his weight flexibility will give him more opportunities to succeed(or fail) on the biggest stage possible. This "have gloves will fight" mentality will benefit his legacy immensely and should make him the winner of this thread hands down.

Kovalev has knocked out a few bums and all of a sudden hes taking over the world.

Wait til he beats someone half decent and then talk.

Half decent like who. Cleverly? Stevenson? Bhop? Shumenov (if he can ever find that lost glove)?

He's already demolished 2 top tens in Campillo and White, and made it look easy.

That's about it for LHW, and the only one I've got doubts over is Bhop (tho Stevenson would have a punchers chance) I'd be more than happy for Clev to prove me wrong in Cardiff, but we'll wait'n'see I guess.

The question was who's got the greatest upside, not who should be crowned king of the P4P ATGs...calm down.

But sorry, to answer the original question, for now Golovkin seems to me the more complete fighter.

Kovalevs early assault and battery is one of the most fearsome things I've seen in boxing, and there's clear skill to back it up, he seems to be able to take a few as well, but I've never seen his chin properly tested. The pace at which he fights is also extraordinary, and I can't help wondering how his stamina holds up over the distance.

The Cleverly fight may answer the stamina question, cos I can see Clevs only realistic chance being to try and stay at range and allow Kovalev to tire before aiming for a points win with his volume punching. If Kov can fight 12 rnds at the pace he starts tho, I struggle to see who could stay with him.

There just seems to be a kind of recklessness about the way Kovalev goes to war, and I can't help wondering how he'll cope on the back foot.

I agree with that but Kovalev would plow right threw GGG's little skinny ass.

Saying and doing is to different things. GGG is just to small and skinny to compete at 168. Ward would make GGG look bad just like he did Abraham.

No he wouldn't. Size had nothing to do with how Ward handled Abraham. He was too skillfull. Abraham is nowhere close, league's apart actually in terms of ring generalship and technique to Golovkin. Stupid ****ing comparison.
