i cant agree with this he has been boxing since he was in diapers...he lived...breathed and shitted boxing......no matter how physically gifted one may be, you still need brains
certainly not he couldn't find a way to beat forest or Winkey. and against cotto showed that he has always relieed on his speed power and combonation punching and is an averager boxer with great phycial attributes and talents. but as faras boxing IQ he's not to bright
I think we need to stop right now and come up with a working definition for "boxing IQ". There's a big difference between complete fighters able to adjust and adapt with multiple ring identitites (Floyd, Hopkins, Calzaghe, Calderon, Mijares), guys with degrees and strong verbal skills (Diaz, Wlad, Brock, Mesi, Jones Jr., etc.) and guys with a deep understanding of the history of the sport (Tyson, Hopkins, etc.). I think we're talking about description number one.
Interesting choice, but a good one I think. Not necessarily the absolute best boxing brain but I think it is safe to say that his ring intelligence has improved greatly - it's arguable that none of his defeats were related to 'Boxing IQ' but could be attributable to physical deficiencies instead. He is an example of the kind of boxer who does what is required to get the result, I don't know how adaptable he really is though as he most often manages to impose his style on the fight (which is surely one component of the IQ). Calzaghe is a fair shout, extremely adaptable, and he needs to be with his severly dimished power. I would have to say that Mayweather takes the #1 spot as he adapts so well that he makes each fight look easy.
I have to interrupt your hate fest. When his brute power wasn't working? You know about as much about that as Duddy knows how to avoid overhand rights, you are clueless.... :-(
PBF, Calzaghe, Hopkins. Guys that can generate gameplans during the middle of a fight and put them into action.
Joan Guzman has a great and very underrated boxing IQ. His stamina isn't what it was years ago, yet he is still able to dominate top fighters because of how quickly he adjusts to styles and how easily he handles any situation in the ring. Well, because of that and his talent.. Calzaghe/PBF are good choices, but their last fights weren't impressive as far as boxing IQ goes. It took Floyd way too long to adjust to Hatton and Calzaghe was just an all around mess that night against Hopkins. Hopkins is another good choice and is one of the most intelligent fighters in the last two decades, but cheating is part of his boxing IQ at this point.
