Mayweather and DLH have nothing to do with what I said ... I think that Cotto v Margarito will not sell ... you see what happened when they both co-headlined a venue ... you heard about the ratings right? Margarito has never headlined an event by himself ... Cotto can't headline a venue by himself ... the two PPV events that he's done has been help by guys who still had a name in the sport. When he headline the Malignaggi card by himself ... he sold like 30,000 buys. He can't do it with Margarito because Margarito has no fan base ... it would just be a waste of money for Bob Arum and it will decrease the star power of Cotto being part in a bad fight card. How can you market that fight to casual fans? ... Yeah us hardcore fans are going to watch it ... but the number of us aren't that much that make up the majority. When bars are buying fights, when the buzz is in the air, when the fight is promoted in more than 2 states ... thats when you have a PPV card.
Exactly. Thats why this fight will have to be a war. Margo doesnt really wear out in the later rounds. Especially if you dont try to slug it out with him. The smart idea would be to outbox him which makes sense but a guy with stamina like Margo and chin like his will be more relentless at the end of the fight. Not to mention if you are gonna be on ur bycicle with a guy like Margo your gonna be moving pretty fast which will wear you out. I think the best plan for Cotto will be to get Margos respect early on in the fight by standing toe to toe with him and landing some viscious shots then he can go on and box if he likes. If Cotto just goes in there trying to outbox him from round 1 i can actually see Cotto getting tired towards the end of the fight and Margarito smothering him and possibly stopping him. If Cotto stands with Margarito like i said earlier and gets his respect then he has a good chance at outboxing him the rest of the fight. This also depends on which Margarito shows up. If its the late PW Margarito then he will be outboxed no matter what. If its the Cintron Margarito then Cotto better get his respect early or else...
Market to who ... Cotto can't fight and bring fans outside of NY/NJ area ... and PR ... Margarito has a limited fan base in Cali ... Both guys are limited to the markets they fight out of ... none have fought enough else where to grant fans to show up.
WHo cares how much this sells? All im worried about is where im going to be while i watch it. YOu can put just this fight on the card and i would buy it and im sure alot of the people here on eastside would too. This cant miss and it will be a fight we will be talking about for the next year or two. However why not make it an all out Mexico vs PR war. That would make it sell more since you know all the Mexican and PR fans will be tuning in. What do u guys think for possible undercard fights with the Mexico vs PR theme???
What a crap ass statement right there TRUEWARRIOR, and why not mention his name in big fights/ he was in plenty of them? Just because he lost in those big fights? Aa far as the topic at hand, I believe Margo has more power but is not as technically sound as Cotto. so it kinda evens out, since Cotto is more accurate and technically better in his punches. But Cotto is not going to be worried about that. Miguel is going to just box side to side getting quick shots to win rounds. Now as in the mosley fight, Cotto dosn't like to leave unanswered punches. This is where Margo can get him. If he gets a decent shot, cotto might try to answer it right away and get pulled into a momentary brawl, that could cost Cotto. I think Cotto is an intelligent fighter that knows better that, but he does like to mix it up at times.
How it sells means absolutely nothing to me. I'm not getting paid money to watch it or to be a fan of either guy. Plenty of fights happen everyday that are worth watching, moreso than some of the fights put on by the so called P4P best in the sport. If it did dismal numbers it will only serve to show that US marketing has gone to the shitter and that US boxing publications have as usual, lived up to the decline in American boxing publicity. Average Joe is more often than not out of the loop when it comes to big fights but sometimes they aren't if a fight is given the right amount of attention/buildup. For example In 2005 Samuel Peter and Waldo Klitschko locked horns in what wasn't a championship fight but an IBF eliminator contest that included one prospect (Sam) and one thrice-beaten former prospect (Klitschko). That card garnered a wild amount of attention that really wasn't expected. And it showed that despite not having 2 P4P stars, despite having one unknown commodity, despite having one on the outs former prospect, a card CAN sell good anyways given good buildup and good media coverage. The boxing pubs did the fight justice by setting the mood that of those two contestants, the future heavyweight champion would emerge. And based on that Joe public tuned in.
Why the **** is fitzgerald concerned with trivial bull**** like how much it sells? This is a great fight for fight fans... As for power, Cotto by a good margin
Well seen as how whether or not a PPV is succesull is subjective, please tell me how many buys this fight would need to get for you to consider it a success.
Any fight that pairs the top Puerto Rican Champ against a top Mexican Champ is going to sell. Puerto Rico + Mexico = Great Fight
YEs thought of that one. I have never seen this Juan Ma though. BUt if he can take a good punch and box good hes pretty much got De Leon beat. I would want Rafa to take De Leons spot since he would represent us better.
250k minimum ... it would have to be enough for the promoter to get his money back and for the fighters to get compensated for putting their lives on the line. Especially considering that you guys say that Miguel Cotto is an elite level star ... he should eclipse 250k
One thing that may be able to be taken into consideration for this fight is the recent cut suffered by Margarito in the Kermit fight. I'm not sure, but can someone tell me if Margarito is prone to cutting. I ask b/c anyone who has seen the majority of Cotto's fights knows how pretty much rearranges faces. With that said, Cotto could potentially open up that cut on Margarito's eye and take advantage. I dont really see this happening, but I thought it was a small possibility. But to answer the thread topic, I think Cotto has a slight edge of power over margarito b/c I believe Margarito wears his opponents down with his volume punching. Like I said earlier about Cotto's opponents, you can see the type of power he has by looking at their faces. Overall, I'd say they are both just extremely heavy handed rather than having that Tysonesque, or Kostya type power.
Cotto doesn't need to come forward, but he doesn't have to backstep. He can do both and pretty much hit Margarito and circle him. Margarito won't be beating Cotto to the punch.
