Who has the power edge in Cotto vs Margarito?

Juan Ma should have no problem outboxing De Leon. the thing is can De Leon catch him and land a solid shot? Juan Ma has looked more like a runner than a boxer lately, it's been winning his fights but I have no respect for that chicken **** style of combat.

 

One thing im worried about is Cotto being overconfident and taking Margarito for granted. Also isnt he getting a new trainer now?

I dont think this factors would affect MArgo because he is still not recognized as the best and will have the hunger.

You think Cotto is that great of a boxer to do that for 12 round to a decision? thats a bold statement mate.

 

I was just remarking on you comment about counterpunching. This would assume Cotto would let Margarito lead & Cotto would try & counter. Cotto is not as slick as Hopkins as in you reference & this could spell disaster for Cotto. But the rest of your reasoning & strategy were right on.

 

Margarito is not prone to cutting. The reason why the Santos cuts happened was because Santos and Margarito just match up terrible and ended up clashing heads almost everytime they came together.

Besides the Santos fights I can't think of another Margarito fight where he was in danger of being stopped because of a cut.

 

Yea lol I agreed with what you said. Didn't try to sound like i was disagreeing with what you said or anything. Cotto definitely can't fight off his back foot for 12 rounds. He definitely has to mix it all up with speed power countering etc. If Cotto goes in fighting with 1 style he will have a ROUGH fight.

 

:yep I think so. It will be hard but I think he can de finitely disect Margarito to a 12 round UD. And if he is accurate and active enough with his offense I think He can do enough damage to Margarito's face to stop it on cuts etc.

Yea I know its bold, But I think this will be a great moment in Cotto's career. A break out performance. (as if he hasn't had any yet?)

 

thanx for the info. however, do you think Cotto can capitalize on the fact that margarito has just recently suffered from a cut against Kermit? We all know that Cotto is the man when it comes to ruining faces, so could he make anything happen??

Not likely.

Cotto does have a way of bruising guys and swelling faces but cuts don't seem all that common. Look at how many flush punches Clottey landed upstairs and how swollen Margarito was from that fight. Cuts were never an issue then.

Cotto depends on precise punching to do alot of damage and I think the Mosley fight showed that if you can worry Cotto enough to make him go backwards it drops his chances of landing with precision. Naturally he isn't as dangerous then.

 

Margarito.

 

I don't think Cotto will be overconfident against Margo.. I mean he didn't even underestimate Gomez, but after the first round or two, when he pretty much thought he was gonna' win, he settled down and sparred with his ass..

That's how I see the fight going too.. Opening up a cut on Margo's eye and just counter-punching the **** out of it.. Not that I think that he'll be counter-punching the whole fight, but I think they'll be trading shots too..

As for the topic, I think their power is pretty much even.. Maybe Margo has the slightest edge, no doubt Cotto is the better puncher..

 

But in recent major fights, Isn't Cotto the one who has suffered facial damage? Cuts, Swelling eye & badly cut lip. How will Cotto cope with a nasty cut or swollen eye. Which would seem to be the case more than Margarito suffering a bad cut.

 

yeah basically, Margarito can be the harder puncher all he wants. He isn't the better puncher though. Mosley and Judah were both harder punchers than Cotto, what did that do for them? This fight is basically going to be like a Mosley fight for Cotto except Margarito is just much bigger but he is slower and has a weaker defense but punches more....lol basically they were both tough guys but 1 guy is more vulnerable.. big Guys with weak defenses are easy to hit for short compact punchers like Cotto. I don't think Cotto will have any problem at all connecting flush on Margarito. Either body or head, he will be landing. Cotto just has to keep this fight as clean as possible calm and in control and he will dissect Margarito.

 

Cotto definitely can cut up, but he has incredible mental focus. In the fights that hes been cut or swollen up he hasn't even reacted to them. He just kept fighting like a ****ing robot lol.
