The question is whether or not he will be able to do that in the late rounds as margarito is applying the pressure.
No doubt about it Cotto has to stay in control all 12 rounds or seriously slow Margarito down. If Cotto losses control or slows down he better have enough early rounds in the bag to win. The late rounds are what Margarito is going to bank on, either that or an early KO which I don't see happening.
very good point. however, i agree with JecBox overall. Both Mosley and Judah were said to hit harder than Cotto, but it didnt help them in the end. Hopefully Cotto will be patient and be able to box Margarito. Clottey easily beat Margarito to the punch for 4 rounds until he hurt his hand. Cotto is 10X the fighter that Clottey is both boxing skill and speed wise. Clottey perhaps has better defense. But like they say, styles make fights and perhaps Clottey's style just gave marg problems.
I think it would be a mistake for either guy to plan for an early KO. I think margarito's best plan of action will be to take some shots early on and try to put his weight on Cotto and hit him to take some life out of him and turn up the heat seriously in the later rounds.
i agree with the thread starter, i don't think cotto will box him for all 12 rounds with that kind of pressure. it's like the same with pacquaio, you can't just elect to box him, you're going to have to fight with him sooner or later and i think the same will happen with cott.
Do you really think Mosley's & Judah's power compares to Margarito? That would be a sad underestimation on Cotto's part. I don't know who ever stated those two had more power than Cotto. Cotto has a heck of a punch himself. I think these two have almost the same power level. Basically what it's gonna come down to is the chin. Margarito has proven he has a set of iron whiskers. The key is what happens when Cotto gets tagged. IF he can shake it off, Margarito will be in alot of trouble...
Cotto hits harder with one punch. Margarito wears guys down slowly with a high workrate. Cotto does the same, but his punches have more on them and create serious facial damage.
Two assumptions here. One being that Judah and Mosley punch as hard as Margarito. Judah had struggled with far inferior opposition at welter and Mosley had really not knocked out anyone better than Margarito knocked out at 147. Second assumption is Clottey's ability. We don't really know how far he will go. We do know that he had only two losses. Those being the bad DQ loss to Baldomir years ago (a fight he was winning) and the loss to Margarito. For all we know those two losses will mean nothing down the road if Clottey secures a big fight and pulls it out (which isn't out of the realm of possibility). I can say however with certainty that Cotto is not faster than Clottey. And it is entirely debateable if Cotto is technically better as Clottey defensively is very sound and his counter punching ability is top notch.
Well margarito actually punched a guys ear off so I think it's safe to say he knows how to damage a face also.
Again Mosley and Judah may not hit harder than Margarito, but they're better punchers! I am 100% sure if we asked Cotto what would you rather get hit by? Margarito's hard looping shots or Zab Judah's counter left uppercut? I think he'd rather take 5 Margarito shots per every 1 of Zab's counter left upper. Over the course of 12 rounds Margarito definitely has more potential to dish out more damage than Judah because of his punch output. I think Mosley and Margarito are about the same. If Clottey is faster than Cotto it really isn't by much, 2ndly Cotto is much more accurate of a puncher than Clottey is, When you're fighting an accurate fighter that guy is going to feel a shitload faster than he really is!
Yes, I know that. But in terms of consistently damaging faces, even early in fights, Cotto is number one. Haven't seen anything quite like it in a long time.
I actually think Judah hits harder with one punch than Margarito and Cotto for that matter. He has a devestating uppercut when he throws it; has speed, snap, accuracy, and power. Those are the punches that hurt Cotto the most - the ones he doesn't see coming. Take Margarito's uppercut. It's slower, carries less snap, but heavy handed. It'll take several Margarito uppercuts to produce the same result on Cotto that one Judah uppercut did.
Think about this: what if Zab Judah was throwing 100+ punches a round, hitting Cintron with everything but the kitchen sink. How fast would Cintron be out of there?
