    Hello,

Here are the top three for most title defenses in heavyweight boxing.

    1. Joe Louis 25
    2. Larry Holmes 20
    3. Wladimir Klitschko 18

Out of these three who do you think had the tougher more competitive era while champion? Who had the better opposition coming up through the ranks?

Holmes and Klitschko are certainly interchangeable for me.

Louis had the least impressive opposition.

Larry Holmes: beat gerry ccccoohney, Shavers , Norton ,witherspoon who were good

As well as a finished Ali and lesser guys Berbick ,
    M. Frazier , Snipes , weaver ,bonecrusher , carlWilliams , ray mercer

That makes him no 1 there its a very good record.

Still he also beat lower tier guys like frank, bey, cobb. Leon spinks

And was beat by tyson and michael *****s

In fact during the 80s he didnt fight pinklon thomas, michael dokes, greg page , tony tubbs but that wasn't down to him.

    This is hard to say.

We don't know how tough Wlad's era really was because his tactics were unbeatable. We do know he didn't come across anyone who could match his upper body strength aside from Brewster (who he went 1-1) with. We know that he didn't come across anyone who can match his speed aside from Haye who was too scared to engage. So I guess by that criteria you'd have to assume his era wasn't that tough.

The Holmes and Louis era are tough to separate Baer/****ey, Walcott/Witherspoon, Galento/Weaver, Sharkey/Ali. My general thinking is Louis opponents achieved more due the way lineage mapped out but Holmes opponents were slightly better man for man.

    Louis

I don’t know what people picking Holmes’s era are seeing to be honest.

Yes there was a lot of talent in that era, but it was never harnessed, and the era didn’t really produce any strong contenders.

Who apart from Holmes was more than a flash in the pan at the top of the division?

You don't know what they are seeing?

Larry Holmes fought in the 1970s, the 1980s and the 1990s. He challenged for the championship in three different decades.

He fought Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Muhammad Ali, Ken Norton, Earnie Shavers, Tim Witherspoon, Mike Weaver, Michael Spinks, Leon Spinks, Ray Mercer, Gerry C00ney, Trevor Berbick, Oliver McCall, Bonecrusher Smith.

How can you say, apart from Holmes, everyone else was a flash in the pan? He fought Hall of Famers in heavyweight title fights over three decades.

All 3 of these guys are all time greats. The fact that others don't shine in their era's is because these guys didn't let them.

Although Holmes fought Tyson, Holyfield and Mercer, I don’t think that most people would consider them part of his era.

I hear that Ali was pretty good once, but I don’t think he was anything special when Holmes fought him.
