If what.... Lennox didnt start to come on strong or if Lennox didnt punch Vitali in the face very hard.:blood
Got to love it. After 30 seconds of research I can tell you that Larry Holmes was in better shape for Tyson than he was for either his win against Mercer or his challenge against Holy. He was 233 plus pound in both those fight...not to mention four years older. He was 225 when he fought Tyson. Funny how faulty memory and bias converges unexpectedly, huh?
aside from fitness, tyson was trained by cus to take out larry. when he took tyson in as a teenager, larry was champ and though he used the same peek a boo style, he trained the young mike specifically to be able to combat holmes jab. i think at any stage past 1983, tyson take out larry
Because Lennox was fighting on the inside which he SHOULDN'T have been doing. Lennox was known to have lapses in focus at times. If Lennox sticks to his game plan of staying outside and jabbing, it would have been much easier. He made it hard on himself.
atsch Tyson beat everyone in the 80s and he was undisputed champ, and when he fought a an old past prime ATG, he won, which is alot more than I can say for Shitali.
I don't care what cus trained him for, Prime Larry makes Mikey quit. As I said, punchers chance. Speed is tought to deal with especially when it comes with power and killer instincts. Tyson had a lot of skills, respect is given. BUT Tyson is overrated and Holmes is underrated in this match-up.
i think the 79-81 holmes is one of the best h2h ever and has the best chance. slightly past his prime, 1983 holmes though might well be in trouble
Tyson did beat who he was required to, and did unify the belts so you can't really ask more than that of a fighter, but in saying that you can't diminish what Vitali has done either, he has done the same. The problem is the brothers have to split an already dismal crop of heavyweights. It's a real bummer right now in the HW division.:-(
Me too, Larry was a great fighter. The man doesn't get his due. Maybe, we'll never know which is always intriguing about the 'Dream' matches we would all like to see. I just think that Larry could stay out of harms way and break Tyson down. I think he could have adjusted later in the fight while maybe getting knocked down but not out, even an 83' Holmes I think could have survived and adjusted. Would have been a bit tougher, but boxing being the 'Mental' game as much as a physical one, I think Larry wins this IMHO.
Also Peter was no.2, behind Wlad, when Vitali came back and beat him. Arreola and Johnson were top 10. And he really wants Haye, who is no.3 currently.
I've never thought of his opposition as being particularly stellar, but unlike many, I don't think that it was crap either... I mean honestly, Herbie Hide, Sam Peter, Corrie Sanders, Kirk Johnson, and Chris Arreola may be limited fighters, but I wouldn't call them ****... We also have to look at the fashion in which he beat these guys.... Hide was in excellent shape, had won 30 of his 31 victories by Ko, and only lost to a prime Bowe who he gave plenty of problems... Klit knocked him out in 2 rounds without working up a sweat... Dito Kirk Johnson... Corrie Sanders had just sparked Wlad... Vitali destroyed him... Sam Peter was a titlist in his 20's, and had never been stopped... Vitali was 37 years old, coming off a 4 year layoff and pounded him to submission..... Again, I don't think very highly of his competition, but let's try and put some of these wins into perspective, and not just take them for face value.
