"There was a lot of ill feeling between Johnson and Langford. He'd never fight Langford ,they fought once and put up a hell of a fight..I dont know who would have won that one if they had ever fought again. And there was allways ill feeling between them that the public didnt know nothing about.
They hated each other like rat poison.
When Johnson drove from Jeffries place,he met Langford on the road.He was allways a crazy driver. He liked fast cars.Johnson did.He took the wheel and he threw the dirt right in Langford's face.If Sam Langford had a gun he'd a killed him right there.
Gunboat Smith in an interview in 1970.

Johnson once pulled a gun on Langford after Langford confronted him in a bar and threatened to flatten him there and then.

While they never fought, Foreman and Larry Holmes don't exactly like one another. Holmes thinks it's a disgrace that people rank him next to Foreman on some Top 10 HW lists and Foreman thinks the same.

Fullmer and Giardello's ill feeling goes back to their fight when both accused the other of butting.
Ike Williams hated Bob Montgomery because he allways thought that Montomery deliberatedly prolonged the beating he gave Ike.Ike returned the favour later.Wolgast and Nelson where bitter rivals ,though their wives were friendly Wolgast eventually went
insane ,still training for a fight that had happened years before.
Basilio really disliked Pender ,whom he thought of as a cheese champion ,because Pender made some disparaging remarks about Carmen and his lack of skill/defence.
Ray Robinson used to goad Ike calling him ugly, though Ike didnt think he could beat Robinson in a match they nearly went at it in the street once.

Archie Moore said that Cochan whom I beleive was of Polish extraction, hated Negroes,as the term was then ,and once spat in ones face in the ring .Moore gave it to Old Georgy good.
Dempsey was a sometime sparring partner for Morris, who used to take liberties with the half starved youngster ,Dempsey recounted how he sat in a cafe opposite Morris who put away a huge plate of food and then topped it with pie and cream ,while Jack sat their penniless with a glass of water and a tooth pic.Dempsey did not forget that.
Fitz and Corbett started when they were matched together Fitz had no beef with "Gentleman Jim "[thats a laugh for a start].They met on the road both doing their work Fitz was affable ,but Corbett ,probably seeking a mental advantage refused to shake hands and stalked away.On another occasion Corbett pulled Fitzs nose .By fight time neither man would shake hands ,and after their scrap Corbett pleaded with Fitz for a rematch,"youve got to fight me ,youve got to fight me,otherwise I'll fight you every time I see you on the street",Fitz replied calmly "Jim ,if you ever lay a hand on me outside the prize ring ,I'll kill you."

    Nice.

Was it something specific or just the general rough and tumble?

Nice stories, the only one I knew was Fitz-Corbett. **** that guy Morris. He sounds like a proper tool.

Frazier used to lose money to his sparring guys at cards and craps etc., on account of how badly he used to beat on them.

    Saddler talking about Pep.

"They introduce Pep,Pep and I would be at a Garden fight, and they'll say ""one of the greatest featherweights,Willie Pep.Here's another retired champ Sandy Saddler".
Thats why I don't care to be introduced in the ring .Instead of saying Sandy Saddler ,the undefeated featherweight Champion of the World",instead,"take it and like it,If you dont want it leave it ." "I'm not angry at Pep at all . , I'm angry at the people who are pushing this thing.
Pep and I are great friends. But one thing he is white ,and if you are white ,youre supposed to be right "If youre white youre right ,if youre black get back." " It's plain old prejudice ."
