Believe it or not,Mike Tyson is a pretty cool person from what we've seen. Met him 3 times in the 90', first time at city hall in nyc.we were rollerblading down the steps of the court buildings and out came tyson n hungout with out us.he kept asking us to do tricks while rollerblading down the steps, lets say we ended up with more bruises n chipped teeth as we tried *lol* at the end bought us all ice cream.end of the 90's he chilled on our block with the fellas and seemed pretty humbled.
Muhammad Ali, at his Deer Lake training Camp, Joe Frazier, in an elevator in a hospital in Somerville New Jersey. Alexis Arguello, Leon Spinks, Aaron Pryor, Mickey Ward, Jeff Fenech, Bert Sugar,Vito Antuofermo, Carmen Basillio, Nino Benvenuti, Earnie Shavers, Ron Lyle, Ken Norton, and Gerry Cooney at Graziano's bar during the Hall of Fame Weekend in Catastota , New York. Mike Quarry in San Diego , and Rocky Lockridge with Lou Duva at Newark airport.I agree ,almost all boxers are cordial, friendly, non phonys when you run into them .
So many. Floyd used to work out at the same 24 hour fitness, and I've run into him here at the movies and at Wal Mart. Rahman, winky wright trained for hopkins at my boxing gym, Round One, Sam peters, Jesus Chavez, Willie Chapman, Duncan Dokiwari was a bouncer at Pure nightclub. Derrick Harmon, several others. Floyd was very very cool every time I met him.
I go to Larry Holmes's gym, and he is in there pretty much every day. He's a great, honest man who loves to joke around and have fun. Ive seen his brother Mark many times in there, and he was the #1 middle weight contender at one point, but KO'd in his title fight.
I have met Ivan Calderón eating at a mexican bar, Miguel Cotto in a church in Puerto Rico, and saw Paul Williams in a gym in PR.
I met felix trinidad right before he lost to hopkins in the garden. I was a cop then, trinidade came in with don king and they served the cops and firemen lunch. Trinidad was very down to earth and let a few of us take pictures, Class act.
Oh almost forgot, We locked up Zab Judah and I spoke with him for a few minutes, Zab was so nice, he's not the monster he's made out to be. Zab told me that he had to go to an awards cerimony for being the youngest champ at ww i believe, he didn't harm anyone, child support issues.
Ive met most of them, but nothing compares to being in camp with the fighters watching them train spar, and workout for a fight. Some guys are unbelievable with their entourages. Tyson for example had a guy that just turned on and off the radio between when he was working with his trainers and just jumping rope or speed bag.
Mike Tyson- He was on probation here after he got out. Kenny Norton- Met him at a SF niner game. Michael "little hands of stone" Carbahal Boom-Boom Mancini- friends with his nephew Harry Arroyo- sparred him Jeff Lampkin- fought out of the same stable Greg Richardson- Same as above Anthony Henshaw- Same GG tourney
Me I've met.... Felix Trinidad Oscar De La Hoya Angel Manfreddy Joan Guzman Joel Casamayor Kid Diamond Miguel Cotto Kendal Holt Wlad Klit Mohammad Abdull....(can't spell it) Curtis Stevens Jadion C. Gary Stark Luis Collazo Zab Judah Paulie Malanaggi Roberto Duran I've met a couple other pro fighters but they lack the kind of exposure the guys above have obtained.
doesnt surprise me at all...it seems that when Mike isnt being berated or pushed into a corner, that he's a nice guy. I met Mancini---great guy, one of the nicest guys around. He stayed for hours taking pics, talking to fans and hanging out. Met Spinks, and he seemed pretty weird.
oh....also met Ivan Robinson---he was mad cool, you wouldnt decipher him from anyone else on the street,,,,and he is small. Charles Brewer briefly as well. ummm... Donnell "real touch of sleep" holmes talked my ear off.
