Hello all, Just wondering. Going back to the late 80's and early 90's to the present day. Which WBO World Champions have helped raise the WBO's profile to where they stand today? I'll throw in Chris Eubank, Naseem Hamed, Joe Calzaghe, Dariusz Michalczewski for starters. Regards and a Happy new boxing year to you all! UndisputedUK
I think with all titles it depends on the title. Consider Pacquiao was recently the WBO WW champ. Ray Leonard boxed for the belt for starters. Definately the outstanding champions you name had a big impact as the dominant champs of their respective divisions
De La Hoya would have to be one. He won a couple of their titles when on the way up, and again won the WBO middleweight title later in his career. By that time he was easily the sports biggest draw, so when a guy like that will fight for your title it puts your organisation at the front of fans minds, and gave them some credibility. Until then the main champions were droppping that belt when the oppurtunity for one of the others came up.
Marco Antonio Barrera is another fihgter who imprved their standing. If an organisation can get some very good fighters fighting for their belts then their standing will definitely improve
