Who here feels "Holy-Holmes" of '92 was good tactically speaking, or just boring?

"Very competitive".... how many rounds did you give Old Holmes?

I only thought Larry earned 2 of the 12 rounds.

It was almost 100 degrees that night, and under all of the ring lights, I'm sure it was over 100 in the ring, so I think that the heat just got to Larry, thus the chunks. People say it is because of Holy's body shots, but I don't believe this for a second.

Agreed. I don't think Holmes did enough to win many rounds. It was only competitive in the sense that Holmes blocked a lot of HOlyfield's shots and avoided being seriously hurt. But Holmes was not active enough to win many rounds.

Holmes won more rounds than Foreman did, at least in my opinion. And Holmes did finish the fight with minimal facial damage, which is a testament to his craftiness and solid defense.

I think Holmes would've decisioned Foreman had the scheduled Jan. 1999 ten (10) round fight gone on as planned....... However, a backer backed out of the promotion just weeks before the event was to occur and both fighters were told they'd have to accept a pay-cut......... Foreman packed his bags and never returned to camp...... Holmes was willing to go from a promised $4 million dollar payday to $2.5 million, but Foreman demanded his full $10 million dollar check, but the money wasn't there......

It was a workman-like effort from both fighters, but nothing special took place. That's why Foreman-Holyfield will be remembered more even if Holmes made it arguably closer on the cards. The older man actually taking the fight to the younger champion was something to see, instead of Holmes's clever but ultimately too inactive efforts. Surely Holmes could not have counted on another Mercer occasion where the opponent is simply befuddled and discouraged by his rope tactics. Holyfield steadily went to work not caring whether he looked good or not in winning.

I don't know though. I thought Holy was trying to look impressive but it's hard when the heavyweight titles at state against a pure spoiler like Larry was in the 90's. All he did was try to draw him into a corner it seemed.

Larry Holmes just didn't have the body to match his mind at that point.

By June 1992, Holmes was 42 yrs old and 233 pounds.... That's a full decade older and 21pounds heavier than he was for Cooney boy in 1982......... However, be as it may be, Holmes still had ring generalship and savvy up the ass against Holyfield, but he no longer had any real spring left in his legs to move about the ring with purpose.... Yes, by 1992 when pitted against world class competition, Holmes loved to rest a wee bit too much in the corner or on the ropes....

I thought it was boring. The best part was the end when Holmes threw up. It looked like a fire hose opened up in his mouth. Holy clearly won, but Holmes fought competitively. Holy was involved in quite a few boring fights in the early 90s. It was hard to make the transition from Tyson being the man to Holyfield. Bowe filled the gap for a little while though.

I would say that the boring fights took place in the mid 90s. After Holmes, the rematch against Stewart and the loss to Moorer weren't anything to write home about.

I wonder how Vaughn Bean got the title shots that he did. He never beat a single worthy opponent during his career.

That's right, because he was pissed off at Greer hitting him in the back of the head.He literally walked him down, hands down to his side, then guided him over to the corner and hammered him like a tent peg - which resulted in Greer falling face first into the canvas.

Palomino was one of the commentators.
