I have, and frankly, I thought it was an embarrassing **** show! It should be striving to become something like the Baseball Hall of Fame which is actually a REAL museum. The Boxing Hall of Fame looks like a personal collection located in someone's garage. I could not believe how small and shitty it was! You would think someone like Don King or De La Hoya would give them a slew of money to try and turn that place around. I went with two friends a few years ago, and I kid you not--we were the only three people in the entire place, barring two employees.
I heard the same thing. The induction weekend is supposed to be great, parades, booze ups, autographs are eaasy to get and a big dinner at the end.The rest of the year it's a ghost town.
Yep, found it. The World Boxing Hall of Fame, based in the west coast. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Boxing_Hall_of_Fame It says there that this HOF is older than IBHOF. Dunno. :think Confusing.
I still had fun, but it was just disappointing to see how small and limited in scope it was. Yes, induction weekend is supposed to be fun. I am going to try to go this year.
They should set up an actual hall where visitors can walk around and see the displays, something like rows upon rows of bronze busts of the HOF fighters, with their actual fighting gloves and other memorabilia. That would be cool.
I was there a couple of times. If you buy their entire package, which includes The VIP cocktail reception , and the dinner, you get treated royally. Problem is, in these events you don't interact with the fighters, and it's expensive. The best place to meet the fighters is at the bar at night. I was doing shots with Alexis Arguello, and drinking single malt Scotch with Leon Spinks (although he's not supposed to drink). I smoked a Cuban cigar with Bert Sugar who will talk endlessly to anyone about boxing. It was a thrill to meet Ruben Olivares and Aaron Pryor. Ken Norton seemed to be pissed off about something and Hagler was toatlly unapproachable. The ringside chats were cool but Gerry Cooney never fails to mention a million times that his father never gave him any credit. It's worth a trip up there believe me.
Well, sounds like it depends on when you go. Wasn't really worth the trip when I made it, as there was nobody in any of the bars I was at and there was nobody in the 'museum', period.
