Many boxers have seen fantastic results by using weights. Evander Holyfield trained extensively with Lee Haney ( x8 My Olympia ). He just happened to become a undisputed heavy champ and 4 time heavyweight champion. Shane Mosley, Kostya Tsyzu, Hasim Rahman, David Tua are just a few names who train extensively with weights.
I'm new here but man is this fun to read. These things start out with a general question and end up being a good old fashioned post war. Weight training can most definitely be done without gaining weight, can increase flexibility, and if used properly, can develop the precise energy system used in boxing. Keeping reps very heavy and within the 1-3 rep range will result in sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, which for the purposes of this topic means that strength will increase without the additional muscle mass. Reps between 5-8/10 will result in muscle hypertrophy, which increases the size of the muscle belly, thus giving that full, massive look. Of course, diet has a lot to do with weight gain as others have already said. A third type of weight training that also does not produce muscle mass/weight gain is to train the type I oxidative fibers, often referred to as slow twitch muscle fibers. This is very important in a sport such as boxing which is an aerobic/alactic sport, although the primary energy system used is aerobic. An example of a way to train this would be using a 2-3 second eccentric 2-3 second concentric on exercises such as pushups, weighted back squats, romanian deadlifts, pulldowns, etc. In addition to the type I fibers, type II fibers can be developed through weighted squat jumps, explosive pull ups, explosive pushups, etc. Therefore, weights can be a very effective supplement to add to boxing. Lastly, weights are an excellent way to lose weight. Many professional athletic trainers I have heard either speak or read state that if they had a choice to help an athlete lose weight, they would cut out cardio before weight training. Personally I think both are necessary. Just my .02 cents.
