single blows, lewis. combos - lewis. average force induced through fight - lewis accumulated total force delivered in entire fight -Marciano, he could sustain his pressure for the entire fight, despite a lot of wild blows.
Okay ,lets put Marciano's challengers against Lewis's ,and vice versa. Moore kod in 9rds Charles Kod in8rds Charles w dec15rds Walcott kod 1 rd Walcott kod 13rd ****ell ko 9rds. Marciano had 6 defences so lets pick Lewis's 6 . You can change the names if you disagree,it isnt really important, imo. Bruno ko7 Morrison ko6 Briggs ko5 Tua w 12 Vitali ko6 Grant ko 2 How do they do vis a vis each others challengers?
If tests conducted on both men in separate eras can be compared reliably, then Rocky Marciano hit as hard as Frank Bruno. I will just throw that one into the mix!
I have my doubts as to whether Lewis would go 2-0 against Charles and 2-0 against Walcott. Mainly because his record is completely lacking wins over fast, cagey, skilful slicksters of that type. Landing big shots on immobile behemoths like Grant, Bruno and Briggs is the antithesis of boxing with a Charles and Walcott. I'm not say Lewis absolute cannot, but there's a severe lack of evidence.
Nikolai Valuev, all 7'0" and 320 pounds of him, should, by virtue of his size, be the hardest puncher in heavyweight history. But he wasn't -- not even close! Earnier Shavers would look like a dwarf next to Valuev, but I think Shavers hit just a little bit harder.
Lewis beat men better than both of them, men like Holyfield who would whip them both at that stage of their careers. You dont think Tucker was fast and cagey?Tyrell Biggs? Marciano's record[ it really should go without saying,] is singularly lacking of kos over modern superheavyweights such as Briggs , Vitali, Morrison, Bruno,Ruddock, Grant,Golota etc. Lewis also has wins over short squat swarmers such as Tyson and Tua:think There is a complete lack of evidence that Marciano could weather the power of any of those big boys.
Were they great fighters at that stage of their careers? I dispute that Walcott , Charles, and Moore were ever great heavyweights. They have never made a top ten that I have seen.:think
This is the knee jerk reaction to the reality that greater size does as a general trend equal greater power and durability i.e. the basis for the very structure of boxing competitions. One outlier does not disprove a reality that is understood in every gym, that is at the basis of every title belt and negotiation and training camp making weight. And beyond that, there does seem to be a flatlining of the power increase above a certain height and weight...
