Who hits harder: Earnie Shavers or Mike Tyson?

While I get the bias there, I do recall Shavers basically bouncing Holmes off the canvas he hit him so hard, while Tyson's first KD of Holmes was a much slower fall.

Holmes fought way more aggressive vs Shavers because he knew he was the way superior fighter and that gave Shavers the opening to knock Holmes down and still got up but Ernie could not finish him.

Holmes was dead scared vs Tyson and fought ultra cautiously at the beginning , when he finally opened up he was immediately flattened and never let in the fight again , under no circumstances would have Holmes gotten up from the final knockdown, Ref or not.

 

He was past prime but the right Tyson put Botha away with was probably just as hard or harder than Shavers

 

I notice boxers often like to claim the opponents who didn't actually KO them as the "hardest puncher" they faced, as opposed to the guy who actually did. It's probably an ego thing to make it seem like they beat the hardest puncher they ever faced, than admit it was someone who actually KOd you.

Shavers was no doubt a hard puncher but he's complimented most by those who beat him, Ali, Holmes.

We saw that a bit with Fury who stated Wilder was a much more dangerous man to face than AJ.

Holmes seemed as phased, if not moreso by Renaldo Snipes's right hand compared to Shavers's. Why is it that Shavers gets so much credit for that knockdown and Snipes doesn't?

Anyway, I vote Tyson, simply because his knockouts were far more devastating than Earnie's, at least the ones we have on video. He dropped Michael Spinks, who mind you had never been knocked down as a professional before that moment, with a right hook to the body. That is more impressive to me than anything the highly overrated Shavers has done.

I'm not sure how you can measure punching power without also measuring punch resistance of the boxers getting punched. This is an exercise in futility.

 

That's my take also. Quite a few of Tyson's opponents thought they'd been in the ring with other fighters that actually hit harder.
Very few of Shavers opponents thought they'd been in against anyone that hit harder than him.
Including Holmes who actually was in the ring against both men.
So in a purely speculative subject, in my opinion one must give in to the opinions of the opponents that actually have been hit by the men.
Many more of Shavers opponents said he was the hardest puncher they faced than Tyson's opponents have said about him.
Yet, as I noted on a post earlier, Tyson was a much more effective puncher..... By far.
Personally, I'd rather be Joe Louis or Mike Tyson
Than Max Baer, Tony Galento,Elmer Ray, Cleveland Williams, Mac Foster, Earnie Shavers, Ron Lyle, Jeff Simms, Gerry Cooney, Ray Mercer, and Dontey Wilder,
All who are possibly bigger punchers than Louis or Tyson but nowhere near as effective.

 

They have three professional opponents in common:

• Larry Sims
• Larry Holmes
• James Tillis

...afaik all among the living still (Sims is hard to find a speck of information about; also there was apparently once upon a time footage of Tyson vs. Sims scrubbed off the face of earth because of Mike's mediocre performance that night ) - so could be asked this in interviews.

Probably loads more men shared the ring with both if we count sparring partners.
