Who holds the best win at middle: HOPKINS (vs Tito) or TONEY (vs Nunn)?

I don't go along with the 'Hopkins beat a welterweight' line. If that's true, then we can write off all of Monzon's best wins and all of Hagler's best wins as well.

Tito had proven to be a great lightmiddle, I'd even say he looked stronger at 154 than he did at 147.

And blowing away Joppy is not something to be taken lightly. Neither B-Hop or prime Jermain Taylor could manage it.

Tito was a fine size for a middleweight, not small by any manner of means, and he had proven himself above welter before the B-Hop fight, that's why he was a strong favourite going in.

In terms of substance and what each fight meant to the sport Toney's win over Nunn was by far more meanigful. Tito was more popular but he wasn't a true MW at the time....he was filling out after moving up in weight. Nunn was a BIG MW and was a ****ing monster....Toney was too at the time so that fight was the best vs the best. Tito vs Nard was the best vs one of the best P4P fighter who was smaller.

Length wise Tito was a MW..he was long and lanky but he wasn't filled out completely. The win for Nard was a very good win, but Tito was never a MW who was on the level of a prime Nunn. Although Joppy lost to Tito inside 12 rounds the way NARD completely destroyed Joppy over the course of a 12 round fight was something terrible. I think Nards dominance over William was more impressive than Tito being able to spark him out within the distance.

EXACTLY! I picked Nard as soon as I heard that the fight was going to be made.

No doubt that Toney over Nunn

  6. I remember watching the Toney vs. Nunn fight when I was a little kid. Michael "2nd to" Nunn was doing pretty well in that fight til Toney turned it around late. But still that win for Toney trumps B-Hop over Tito, just like some other posters said, Nunn was clearly more established at 160 when Tito was bottom feeding before the Hopkins fight.

    can you explain this ?
Toney by far. nunn was a big and also undefeated by the way middleweight.
Trinidad was a former welterweight whom his golden goose , his engineered wraps , was depraved from him just pre fight.

I think people are forgetting the atmosphere that Tito created going into the Hopkins fight.

After beating De la Hoya this guy went on one of the most incredible runs and battered Reid, Thiam, Vargas and finally Joppy at 160 and he looked incredible in the process. In fact I thought he looked even better at 154 and 160 (Joppy) than he did at 147. Hopkins wasn't given much of a chance by boxing public. And even insiders, credible people favored Trinidad. He was a strong favorite. Nobody beat Joppy the way Tito did. More importantly what we saw in that fight was that Trinidad carried his speed and power to 160.

I was shocked when Bhop gave Tito a beating. Round in Round out my jaw was dropped meanwhile Tito's father continued to lie to him that he's winning the fight even though we all knew what was happening.

In hindsight, given Tito's brief stay at 160 the Nunn victory holds weight because Nunn was proven at 160 time and time again. But to me; I remember there was a thread in the Classic forum of the moment you realized a fighter was an ATG; this win over Tito is what made me believe that Hopkins was a great fighter. Tito was a great fighter. He may not have been at middleweight for long but I have a hard time believing that had he campaigned at 160 for a while before getting a second go at Bernard he would have been successful. He would have beaten Eastman, Allen, Echols and Holmes.

The Toney fight was awesome though. I can see why people chose the Nunn victory over Tito but the performance, the hype around the time and the expectation I went with Bhop over Trinidad. Remember Tito was supposed to fight Roy Jones next had he beaten Hopkins. Roy Jones while his legacy was still untainted. And some (not me) thought it would have been a competitive fight.

AS for Charlievint: I think Tito's win over Joppy was more impressive than Hopkin's win over Joppy.

I didn't. I followed hopkins's career and saw a hard guy a guy who would never let a smaller man come up to his division and take his title. Not to mention Hopkins was a stylistic hell for Tito. I knew Hopkins was all wrong for Tito and betted accordingly and made out like a bandit because of it. I have no idea why others couldn't see this as well.

Yes, of course: Hopkins achieved much more than Toney did at middleweight. 20 defences, unified champion, cleaned out the division, etc etc.

You're not a poster whose posts I often enjoy (if I'm thinking of the right guy), but that was a really good read mate, thanks for your input. I think Toney-Nunn was slightly better, but I agree with more or less everything you have said, good stuff :good

I picked Toney over Nunn, but Hopkins beating Tito made him clearly HoF. Toney over Nunn was an upset at the time similar to Barkley over Hearns.

how is it upset if tito one of my favorite fighters had one albeit devastating ko win of joppy at middle while bernard was in midst of his20 defense rein at mw so to lable it upset in my opinion wrong but definitly quality win much better than the robert allen ,rodney jones ,an antwan echols of the world.

It was an upset because Trinidad was expected to win. He was a 3 to 1 betting favorite. 15 of 20 "experts" polled in The Ring picked Tito to win.
