Who holds the better win over Qawi: Michael Spinks or Holyfield (1st fight)?

the better fight obviously was the qawi/holyfield fight for me, qawi really did not turn up for the spinks fight

Call him green all you want, Holy looked about as good as I've ever seen him against Qawi. Spinks fought the better version and won in more convincing fashion. Not a very close fight, whereas Holyfield/Qawi was a war for the ages.

 

What makes you say that? I think he showed up to fight, but thought better of it once he got a taste of Spinks's power early on. Otherwise he was just getting his face jabbed off. Masterful performance from Spinks.

 

I'd say Spinks over Qawi. He beat Qawi at a divison he's more highy regarded at and also Qawi had two solid wins over Saad probably his best wins. The better fight was Qawi/Holyfield no doubt but I enjoyed both of them. Spinks showed heart by firing combinations and mixing the uppercut in his combos. Neither fighter had a completely easy time with Qawi either though Spinks beat him more clearly.

 

Spinks was missing a lot of punches he didn't look great against Qawi but after the 5th or 6th he started pressing the action more and was taking the rounds but not easily. He did good to move laterally and pick his shots but he sure was missing.

 

I disagree. One of the most well-executed gameplans I've ever seen, actually. He didn't seem to be missing much with the jab, while at the same time making Qawi miss damn near every single one of his.

But maybe I oughta rewatch it, get a fresher take.

while they are both very good wins for their own unique reasons, I think Qawi's value was a bit higher when Spinks defeated him.. In addition, even though Evander had very few bouts against Dwight, we also have to consider that Spinks was facing him after a major trajedy, losing his wife... He was crying in the locker room, within moments of the fight starting, because his 3 year old daughter asked him if mommy was coming to the fight... I don't know if I could have stepped in the ring after that....

 

No, you're partially correct. He outboxed him after like the 6th round(around there) and continued to take the rounds. Before that he was missing....a lot. I think even after that he still was missing somewhat but he dictated the fight and won it clearly. More clear than Holyfield did. Nothing against Spinks because Qawi was very hard to land flush on. He fought well but really it was his combination punching & lateral movement that won Spinks the fight against Qawi. I honestly don't remember if he had so much success with the jab but I remember him pressing the fight more with combinations after the 5th or 6th. Both Spinks and Qawi fought with solid defense they both were missing. One of the best tactical/technical fights to watch though it started a bit slow.

 

I don't really regard the second Qawi-Holyfield fight that highly but the first was a great win for Holyfield. Spinks was great in his time but unfortunately he gets remembered when he fought scared and for money against Tyson. Spinks was one of the greatest light heavyweights.

 

Spinks win was better by a good margin i'd say.


Holyfield is one of the most overrated fighters of his generation for me.His strength, willfulness and strong basic tools made him formidable as a small heavy type, but there was little depth to his approach as a boxer-puncher.hardly any finesse, not a smart fighter or genuinely versatile.His longevity as a contender impressed me most really.

Holy's first win over Qawi was a hard fought war, in which the crowd got more than their money's worth, and Evander got some good experience... Spinks' win of Braxton ( Qawi ) was terrific victory over a prime opponent and a test of true heart given the circumstances...

 

Really? That's the one thing that sticks out in my memory regarding that fight. The simultaneous jab/slip of the head to the left that completely took the play away from Qawi. The consistent lateral movement merging everything nicely.

 

That's how I remember the fight. It was a masterful performance. Spinks had the busy jab thoughout and was throwing power shots for effect. He didn't land with a lot of his power shots but their presence in the exchanges were recognized and respected by Qawi.
