A couple of other boxers that really hurt Holyfield were Dwight Muhummand Qawi and Michael Dokes.

I dunno, but he was sure hurt a lot for someone known for his supposedly "great chin".

Remember Cooper came into this fight at short notice so I believe he would have KO'ed Holy if he had time to train like Holy did.

Sure he could, until he ran out of gas in the second round.

Toney battered Holyfield from pillar to post.

I really believe that that was a very good version of Holyfield.

Toney beat him up really bad, head and body. That was the first real quitting job that Holyfield did.

When you constantly fight the best it is inevitable that you will regularly get hurt, particularly in a strong heavyweight division! Holyfield's chin and track record of fighting all comers is second to none in the sport!

  9. He said punch for punch it was Foreman but that Bowe hit him consistently hard.
I'd say Bowe then Foreman then Cooper.

Holyfield's heart and recuperative powers are what saw him through so many bad situations, not his chin. It wasn't a bad chin by any means, in fact it was quite strong all things considered, but I think people tend to go overboard when they mention him with the all time greats in that regard.

I don't see how you could argue otherwise. It was a clear 10-7 round.

I don't get why people are discrediting Toneys win over Holyfield by saying that Holyfield was totally shot.

That version of Holyfield was surely past prime (Holyfields prime was at CW anyways), but then again Holy had a lot left. Holyfield is one of the most durable HWs in the last 20 years, he came from a loss but he was still considered a top5 HW at the time he met Toney. Toney was also considered the underdog against Holyfield by most experts. And nobody has handled Holyfield like Toney did in the 8 years AFTER that fight, not Ibragimov, not Valuev and not Oquendo. Holyfield is a top20 HW even today!
And about that often stated shoulder injury excuse: Holyfield stated before the fight that he had surgery and that his shoulder was fine finally, and immediatly after the fight, when asked about his shoulder by Jim Grey, he said that his shoulder didn't bother him. These are facts.

And we must not forget that Toney himself was quite some years removed from his prime (which was at MW/SMW), even if he was on a successful comeback trail.

Holyfield didn't quit in this fight though, he got up to his feet after the KD and was prepared to go out on his shield, but his corner threw the towel. Holyfield parted ways with his trainer because of that.

a guy that fought everyone and was always outweighed by 20 pounds or more when he became a heavyweight....you obviously havent been around boxing very long to make such an ignorant comment
throw out some heavyweights with a chin that you consider good or better than his :think

hoyfields prime was at cruiserweight? im starting to wonder if you guys saw any of their fights on something other than youtube
he turned pro in november 1984
his last fight at cruiserweight was april 1988
thats only 3 years 5 months as a pro....he had ALOT OF PRIME years left
Holyfield when he lost to toney had
    This content is protected
    in his last
    This content is protected
and coming off his 6th loss
he had also had 17 world heavyweight title fights and 6 world title fights at cruiserweight ....thats a **** ton of world class comp and all legit belts unline the crap belts today....so in short...Holyfield was DONE DONE DONE DONE when toney fought him....he got shut out by larry ****ing donald in his fight after toney...
thats why toney gets no credit...

Holyfield went life and death in every of his big fights, you name it. He had to be hospitalized after Dwight Qawi in that 15 rounder and the WBA Jr HW Championship, Rick Quartey in his 3 rounder for the IBF CW title, Michael Dokes for the WBC Continental Americas HW Championship 1989, Alex Steward I, George Foreman in his first HW Title defense, Bert Cooper as a late sub for Tyson Nov 1991, Bowe had his face swollen like never before in Nov 1992 and even losing, broke his nose in Nov 1993, Was outfought all night long by Moorer. He simply struggled with Mercer and again, he had an incredible fight with Bowe, first time TKOed, went beyond the barrier of pain against Tyson, got hurt and demolished Moorer in the rematch, had life and death fights with Lewis, got hurt by Ruiz, got dropped and pretty much hurt by Toney, great efforts against Rahman, Savarese, Oquendo and lately against Valuev. The lifestory of this guy is of a warrior.
