Gavilan's an intersting one, with his reach and speed. Bummy Davis had a good one with Basilio, too. He had the guts and applied so much pressure. De La Hoya nearly beat Mayweather by backing him up.

Yep Hector & Lloyd, these are def the 2 that would put it on Floyd. Hectors the ultimate stylistic nightmare, all out hell in the ring for Floyd, just can't see what he could do to negate all the advantages you rightly pointed out that Hector would employ.

Just having just watched again that surgical demolition of Curry by Honeyghan, jeezus, talk about Floyd being tailor made for something similar, apologists make out it was just a bad day at the office for Donald ,weight issues & underestimation of opponant ect ect, hogwash. If Curry was the Cobra then Honeyghan was the Mongoose, the speed & POWER of his countering shots were incredible, sublime footwork, he looked lethal, I just visualized Floyds stance & work output against Lloyds & it's gonna be a similar all out thrashing put onto Mayweather.

I'd just love to hear from any of the drones on here how Floyd is gonna cope with that Lloyd who smashed up Donald. Lloyd was a full on brute with supreme boxing nous, Floyd would leave the ring looking like a cooks sieve, shame Lloyd turned into the party animal he did, but such was his make up.

Alexis has a tricky time with Mayweather because of his speed, movement and angles will be a problem to hunt down. The problem for Mayweather is when he gets tagged by Alexis it will change his game plan whereas Alexis will never change or have a reason. He will simply stalk, corner, and fire. Once he get Mayweather to stand still the fight will change and it will be Mayweather either doing all he can to fend off the danger or fighting back. Either way he will be at a huge disadvantage.

I think they are about equal in speed, power, and skill. I think Barney is tougher. Mayweather will be fighting a guy who is just as careful as he is. I like Ross because has a higher work rate and is just as crafty as Mayweather. Close fight.

This would be a fantastic fight. Chavez would be close to his offensive and defensive prime. His combinations are beautiful, his standard slips and ducks are great. He would be all over Mayweather who would have no choice but to dance, stick, and move. This is something he can do. I see it a close match but one that the pressure of Chavez overcomes the slipperiness of Floyd.

Neither man was at his prime at this weight. I think Pernell is just a smarter and more standard fighter. Better jab, southpaw, better tested defense and at this weight this faster. Floyd once again will have to fight someone elses pace.

Good soild challenge. The best Trinidad at this weight is fast, good at cutting the ring and relentless. floyd will have his hands full trying to not get hit. I would say he has never faced this kind of power. I think this is a fight that he can win because Trinidad can be outboxed round after round if you stick to the plan. If you deviate from the plan you go down. Floyd is smart enough to stick to the plan. Point win. Close, clear.

I see Hearns vs. Duran. Why would it be any different? Same Hearns, facing a less skilled opponent (Mayweather is less skilled that the 154 Duran). I see a pretty clear beatdown KO.

Great post, makes you actually take a look at the true greats of the past. I always liked Pryor at 140. Too much everything for PBF. And Duran at 135. If Duran muscled and bullied SRL at welter, he would do the same with PBF at 135 ...

Absolutely right ! With nothing to fear and looking to drive home a message. Hearns walks out to do damage and not a backward step. PBF has nowhere to go and nothing to deter Hearns. It`s ugly and painfully brief ...

A ring Magazine article 2 years ago where Hearns was giving an interview and specifically talking about how Manny and Floyd would do in his era, and more specifically, against himself:

    Hearns’ thoughts on Mayweather:

“Floyd Mayweather Jr. is an excellent fighter. I will give credit where credit is due. I can not take anything away from Floyd Mayweather.

“Floyd Mayweather is a very smart fighter in the ring. He feints well, and he punches pretty good. I mean he’s pretty active while he’s in there.”

On how Mayweather and Pacquiao would do against himself, Leonard, Hagler, Benitez and Duran:

“I think that [Mayweather] would do pretty good. He’s got good head movement and I can’t put him down. … I have to give him his props. He could last.

“Manny Pacquiao, I think that he’s a pretty good fighter too. I think that he would do well. He would do OK. I think that he would do pretty good.”

On what his strategy would be in a fight against Mayweather:

“Against me, I would have to respect him. I think that he could go the distance with me. I would have to out-think him and definitely out-jab him. He’s a shorter man, so he can’t get to me.

“I would have to keep the jab on him and keep him at a distance and force him to use his head movement all of the time. Somewhere down the line, I would probably hit him with a couple of right hands.

“I would probably get him with a good right hand if not an average right hand. If I was to go to the body, you know that might play into what he is probably trying to do strategically.

“I think that if I got closer to him trying to land a body shot, that would be what he wants. So I think that my best thing would be to stay on the outside and just box him. But I think that he could go the distance with me.”

To those who think that he would knock Floyd out inside 3 are absolutely nuts.
Floyd wouldn't fight Tommy the same way that Marvin, Duran, even SRL did with him. The fight would be a lot more similar to Hearns' fight against Benitez where it went the distance. Floyd wouldn't stand in the pocket and trade with him, rather he'd utilize his footspeed and lateral movement to decrease Hearns' punch volume.

It's not fair to hypothesize how Floyd would do against those Welter's from the 80's aside from Duran. Ray Leonard and Hearns started as Welter's and worked there way up to LHW and CW respectively. These men are naturally MUCH larger than FLoyd. Floyd walks around at 150 lbs, he's been fighting well out of his weightclass for almost ten years now. The guy is a Junior Welterweight, and when I think of hyptohetical matchups it's him at 135 against guys with similar size to him. Guys like Benny Leonard, Duran, Sweet pea and Armstrong. NOt SRL, SRR, Hearns, etc.

Fighters' assessments of themselves are seldom accurate. I'd like to hear what he would have said about Duran before they fought, or in this article if they never did...

Benitez was about 10 times more mobile (of foot) than Floyd and a different style altogether.

To say Hearns blows him out early isn't ridiculous, but what happens more likely is that Hearns takes his time, figures him out, then decapitates him mid rounds. If not, decision win for Hearns.
