Amen to that! I took BJJ lessons for awhile last year and was grappling with a heavyset guy who was a nice guy but his breath and body odor were both revolting. The gi made me sweat like crazy too and I realize from having that same fellow on top of me when in the guard that I also might be claustrophobic. At my age (42) everything aches so I just stick to softball or golf these days.

Because belts and rankings don't mean anything but just the amount of time you've put in. It all has to with where your getting your knowledge from and who's teaching you the right methods and correcting you on the small things, because the small details make a big difference when your talking about techinque.

BJJ is a little different from most other martial arts in that the belts still actually mean something (for the most part). This is why three(?) people have now said that a guy with 3 years 'on and off' experience saying he can hang with brown belts falls into one of three categories:
    1) The guy is talking a little bit of bull****
    2) The brown belts were going easy on him and he just didn't notice
    3) They weren't legit browns.

or the highly unlikely fourth category:
    4) The guy is a ****ing BJ-esque phenom or freaky strong and powering his way through the wrestle (which could stil fall into category 2).

    :deal

I've been training for about 3 years, consider myself a pretty decent blue belt, do ok on the comp scene but still get molested by my brown belt coach who is atleast 7 kg's lighter than me.

Did Tae Kwon Do for a couple of years. Teacher was absolute shite so never learned anything. Still managed to come runner up in a national competition

Did a bit of Wing Chun & Aikido, which makes me the envy of keyboard warriors...NOT:!:

Stopped Aikido when too many over-zealous arseholes came in with Cobra Kai attitudes.

Uh huh. These are the idiots that disgrace the martial arts. It's called training for a reason. Just 'cos I yield a bit doesn't mean it's head-slam or limb-break time.
Uh...forgot what I was getting to...damn! bigironmike's avatar is mesmerising!!!
