There isn't a clear number 1, however i pick Margo as Cotto was the accepted top guy in the division and had all the hype around him, plus Williams loss to Quintana leaves a bit of a shadow on things (yes i realise he avenged it in great fashion).

Pwill was a former margo sparring partner who gave margo a hard time in sparring. There was even a rumor that PW knocked margo down in a sparring. Since then williams wanted to fight margo and finally caught up with him when he became a mandatory. You know what happened when they fought.

Margarito. Cotto was the recognized #1, Margarito beat him. Margarito is #1. Paul Williams is #2

There is no #1 welterweight IMO until we have a unified champion. I don't care who beat who and all the back and forth bickering. There needs to be a unification tournament like they had in 2001 w/ Trinidad, Hopkins, joppy nad Holmes so we can get an undisputed champion. Period!:verysad

very true but you somehow forgot to mension that Margarito was beaten by Williams, sequently Williams is #1.

I don't understand what is so unclear to many of you guys.
And I do believe that Oscar was right saying that fighting Margarito would be unfair in relation to Williams cause he is the actual #1 at welterweight.

    he isn't ducking him
    HE ALREADY LOST TO HIM

    Dumb logic.

Tony wasn't even considered the #1 welter then.

If Williams beats Margarito now, then he becomes #1, until then it's Margarito at the top.

    Then ???
wtf do u mean wasn't even considered #1 THEN ???
They fought only a year ago.

Thats a dumb logic, Margarito now as a fighter is not any better than Margarito 1 year ago (which is not the case with Williams) + what brought Margarito at the top ? Cotto ?

Try to comprehend it that way (forget about the names).

    There are three boxers(a,b,c)

    (A) lost to (B) and then (A) knocked out (C)

How do you think which one should be called the best of all them ??

Right now you are saying that boxer (A) is better than (B) despite of the fact that he lost to him.

Williams. you can't be the number 1 in your division if there is someone active who have beaten you in that division. since the #1 already lost, the #2 will take his place and that is Williams.

    better put a poll.

    So true.

The question here is not "who do you think is the best welterweight", it is about rankings.

And in that category Margo IS above Williams. Remember, we're talking about Welterweight rankings, and Margo has wins over Cotto (#1 at the time), Clottey (#5) and Cintron twice (#10).

Apart from his win over Margo one year ago, Paul has a sole win over (now ranked #19) Quintana.

This should be a poll but I have Williams at number one.
