I just put Saul Alvarez and Anthony Joshua through Google Trends to see which one is more famous in the world.

The results were for every 1 person that searched for Saul Alvarez, 10 people searched for Anthony Joshua, so according to Google Trends Joshua is 10x more famous than Canelo.

Also the only country in the world were more people search for Canelo than Joshua is Mexico, every other country in the world including Canada, and USA have more people searching for Joshua.

Check it out if you want.

Canelhoe is a bigger ppv star in country where boxing is dead and begging for A J to go and fight

HBO would drop hoe for aj like a concrete block or TV from a hotel window

ward isn't a star in the states. no one knows who he is unless they are a boxing fan. which in the states is a small minority of sports fans these days.

americans don't associate with that poll because bicycle racing and formula one aren't even a blip on the screen over here. tennis and boxing are both in their death throes. golf has waned drastically.

People are equating how much money a fighter generates to popularity and that's a flawed argument. Would be valid if everywhere had the same PPV platform and price but that's just not the case.

I'm sure in the US you'll have some sports stars in NFL, NBA who make far more money than some global sports stars but ask someone who Tom Brady is in China, UK, Germany etc and they'll go who?

US sports is big business and of course money driven. Not everyone has that kind of platform for all sports. For example in Germany football tickets are no where near as expensive as the UK because they don't look to make the most money, they want sports to be affordable and accessible to everyone, hence why you don't have PPV in the German market.

Carl Froch was making as much money as Wlad was per fight near the end of his career, but I don't think he was as big a star as Wlad, world wide. The difference being Froch was on Sky PPV while Wlad was subject to the free TV platform of RTL. Different markets, different pricing. So money generated alone can't alone by itself prove the popularity of one fighter over another.

Considering that Joshua just had a huge and dramatic fight it's not surprising he's trending more. Maybe get the trend stats after Canelo/Golovkin and compare to Joshua's stats now might give us a fairer assessment.

More than half are from the Americas, moot point I'm afraid. This is an American forum.
Lets say this poll was a worldwide one, like a poll card was posted through every single door on earth. Joshua would beat Canelo as being more recognisable. He's done it on a boxing board ffs, never mind casual fans.
