true, but if their boxers can't do it in the ring, soon they will be figured out and be on the sidelines until arum dies or retires........just look at the last few mega-stars of our generation, or you can even go back 25 years....and who's built them, ARUM.....you can't just come up to him with a billion dollar company and expect him to lay down...arum knows the game to well to let a group of fools take over......
Like most people it depends on who you ask. I don't think he's the worst guy in the world but he has quite a few big name detractors such as James Toney, Shannon Briggs and MAB.
Are we seriously trying to make Bob Arum out to be a hero here? Arum is as responsible for the fiascos of boxing as anyone else. The best guys when it came to prospects where the Lou Duva and Lou Dibella types. Those guys have faded to the background so now we're stuck putting over Top Rank? Oi.
Well, Arum like most promoters definitely has most of the ills associated with his kind in boxing. What he doesn't have is Golden Boy's propensity for rushing fighters without regard for their careers. And this is no small matter. With GBP's guaranteed dates, and their top prospects rushed too fast and subsequently, to borrow quick-draw fans' lexicology, "exposed", who do we get filling these Golden-touched HBO dates? In this regard, all other things being equal Golden Boy certainly will contribute a lot faster to boxing going to the dogs, than Top Rank would. There, does it seem like turning a blind eye on Top Rank's own blots?
First and foremost, I see nothing wrong with rushing prospects. I think GBP needs a new match maker certainly...but you going to tell me you'd prefer to see fights like...I dunno Lopez against some guy at the bottom portion of the top 50 on PPV? How about Cotto vs Alfonso Gomez again? They're two extremes. GBP may "rush" but Top Rank "milks". GBP may send a prospect out there before he's ready, Top Rank will send a prospect out there when they feel like the investment is paying off. I need to know of a prospect who was rushed by GBP by the way. I figure Victor Ortiz is going to get mentioned but that guy was as ready as he's ever going to be. And if we're arguing about sending boxing to the "dogs", I'd venture a guess to say that oversaturing the PPV market at exorbitant prices (Top Rank has at least a bi-monthly PPV structure) , trying to push prospects at an extremely slow rate (JCC Jr isn't getting anywhere soon, Vanes Martiorsyan is being developed slowly), trying to black ball certain promoters you don't like (Goosen and at one point GBP) and spouting off baseless, offensive comments (HBO didn't pick up Pavlik/Rubio because they're racist against white people, MMA fans are redneck skinheads, Floyd Mayweather isn't worth a half split etc) are more than likely to hurt boxing than rushing your prospects. Just my stance on the matter.
:deal This is the side of Top Rank people seem to ignore when they compare it to GBP. I get the feeling Arum is just trying to cash out. All these PPV's for unproven prospects is riiculous. Arum just takes advantage of hispanic patriotism and tries to push hispanic fighters on hims PPV's. As a matter of fact. **** Bob Arum. GBP is the lesser evil
Short Answer: Darth Vader Long Answer: The underside workings of boxing, the decides what deals are done and has a roster of guys under his management that would make any promoter blush. Him and Arum do not get along.
Al Haymon is the guy who wouldn't put Mayweather anywhere near Paul williams even if he manages both fighters
Haymon was put into power by thepuppetmasters. he's their puppet. not that there's any mafia influence in boxing or ever was : 0 his knowledge of boxing is minimal at best as are his communication skills and ability to sell the sport as a forefront media personality. in sum, he's no builder of the sport but a leech of it. money is his master not the future well being of the sport.
