POUND TOP 10 1. David Haye - Heavyweight London (24-1, 22KOs) Haye breathed new life into the heavyweight division with his superb defeat of John Ruiz - we hoped the Brothers Klitschko would follow but it's Audley Harrison instead. 2. Carl Froch - Super-middleweight Nottingham (26-1, 20KOs) Froch was defeated for the first time in his career by Mikkel Kessler in Denmark. Next up is German Arthur Abraham later this year - his fights aren't getting any easier. 3. Amir Khan - Light-welterweight Bolton (23-1, 17KOs) Khan rises one place after his 11th-round stoppage of Paulie Malignaggi on US debut. Defends against Marcos Maidana in December - when his whiskers will be tested. 4. Kell Brook - Welterweight Sheffield (22-0, 15KOs) Brook defeated fellow Brit Michael Jennings in Birmingham but we it didn't prove if he was ready for the leap to world level. European champion Matthew Hatton next? 5. Nathan Cleverly - Light-heavyweight Cefn Forest (19-0, 9KOs) Cleverly came of age with a splendid defeat of rugged Germany-based Iraqi Karo Murat in Birmingham. Should land a world title tilt later this year. 6. Rendall Munroe - Super-bantamweight Leicester (21-1, 19KOs) Munroe ground down Mexican Victor Terrazas in a WBC title eliminator in April and his prize is a match with full WBC champion Toshiaki Nishioka in Tokyo in October. 7. John Murray - Lightweight Manchester (29-0, 17KOs) Murray added the vacant European lightweight title to his British crown by stopping Gary Buckland, and will now be targeting world honours. 8. Kevin Mitchell - Lightweight Dagenham (31-1, 23KOs) Mitchell was cut down to size by Michael Katsidis in his challenge for the WBO interim lightweight title at Upton Park. Time to go back to the drawing board. 9. Matthew Macklin - Middleweight Birmingham (27-2, 19KOs) Macklin reclaimed the European crown with a straight-forward win over Shalva Jomardashvilli - but we'd still like to see him against fellow Englishman Darren Barker. 10. Darren Barker - Middleweight London (22-0, 14KOs) An injury put paid to an eagerly anticipated clash with Matthew Macklin and we can only hope they meet for Macklin's European crown later this year.
I think Haye may well be the best current marketing man in British boxing, that's hard to deny, he clearly could sell ice to the Eskimos. Does he deserve to the current British no 1 slot? I say not.
