Both are very good fighters in their era but I'll pick Mayweather because of his style... ask Hatton:yikes

    Sugar Ray Leonard

He beat Roberto Duran twice, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, and Wilfred Benitez. Clearly superior to Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Jose Luis Castillo twice, and Diego Corrales.

At 147, Leonard beats Mayweather convincingly too. And this isn't a knock at Floyd at all, because he is a GREAT fighter. It's just that Leonard was easily better H2H and resume-wise.

Exactly. Not to mention, Leonard was the naturally larger fighter, with much, much more power, with comparable speed and ring savvy, and he could take a hell of a punch. I just rewatched the Leonard v Mayweather Sr. fight yesterday, oddly enough. Hopefully, Floyd Jr. would fare better than his father. Sugar Ray was a tremendous fighter.

Floyd is a great fighter but he aint no Sugar Ray Leonard, Floyd hasnt had to go in with the kind of class that Leonard had to deal with, Benitez, Hearns, Duran and Hagler .... Hatton and De La Hoya are good fighters but they are a long way from this standard. A more serious comparison would have to be Floyd Mayweather and Pernell Whitaker as Leonard is possibly the greatest fighter in the last 30 years due to the quality of the opposition he had to face and beat, would Mayweather be undefeated if he had to face Duran, Benitez, Hearns and Hagler, its a possibility but i seriously doubt it .. Floyd, Pernell is a tight one, i'd probably go with Floyd on this but Sweet Pea was brilliant

Anybody care to explain how Mayweather is better? Whether it is his resume or head to head ability...

SRL beats Floys at 147, however SRL started his career at 147. He was a natural WW. Floyd started his career at 130, and was able to display his full array of skills at between 130-140. The guys at 147 are a little too big for him to do so at that weight. If size weren't an issue, Lil Floyd would beat SRL. Floyd is the more gifted fighter. He's better defensively, he has better awaremeness and reflexes. His timing is better too.

I agree with Axel, floyd looks to be a good fighter but hasnt fought the opposition Leonard did. Floyd is just about making money and beating lesser opponents in the process. If Ray where mayweather, he'd fought Cotto, Williams, Mosley. Mayweather doesnt want to take risks, its a shame cause early in his career thats all he did, big fights. I would give him all the credit in the world if he went back to his old ways. Now hes overhyped by the nut huggers

Floyd is not better than Sugar Ray Leonard, Robinson or Ali. He needs to fight a few more top fighters before we can even compare him to these guys.

Leonard in a head to head sense at 147. If Bigreg wants to argue that Floyd at 130 was possibly better than Leonard at 147 head to head, fine, but still remains the fact that SRL's resume shits on Floyd's.

SRL is a benefactor of circumstances. If Floyd was a hotshot olympic gold medalist who turned pro in the late 70's as a natural WW, he would've kicked the crap out of Leornard, Duran, Benitez, and Cuevos. Hearns would've given him some trouble, but he would beat him too. He wouldn't have been outboxed like Leonard was. As it stands, Floyd did not win a gold medal, he turned pro in the late 90's, and he's not a natural WW. He was completely dominant at 130, but there just weren't any Duran, Hearns, or Benitez level fighters around for him to fight. Also, because he wasn't an instant cash cow like Leonard, fighters such as Casamayor, Freitas, and Hamed wanted no parts of him due to the risk/reward factor.

    1)

2)True, none of those around to test him, just a B+ level fighter in Castillo, who pushed him to the limit.
