By "worst" I mean: 1. Incompetence 2. Gets too involved 3. Stops fights too quickly (several British refs) 4. Favoring/helping event promoter's fighter (Reiss in Kessler-Ward) 5. Doesn't stop fights soon enough and lets boxers get hurt 6. Favors boxers because he likes him (Smoger in Hopkins-Murat) Or any combination of the above.
I haven´t got a clue why John Lewis is catogorized as such. I can not recall having seen bad refereeing from him. But I´ve got a story from old days - when a Danish referee, Einar Roth used to referee fights at promotor Mogens Palle´s monthly shows in Copenhagen. Roth was a very fine gentleman who liked to welcome boxers from out of town, helping them in the gymn and advicing them on their upcoming fight against the Danish hometown-boy. What he forgot to tell was the fact that he was refereeing the contest. Roth had a very quick 10 count and hated to see foreign boxers bleed in a Danish boxing ring. Boxers were counted out before hitting the floor and send back home with a bloody nose. I do think the standard is better today - the referee know he is wieved by millions and his actions can be replayed till the end of days. He is there to protect the boxers and in most cases te ref does the right thing before a fatal ending.
I would say Lawerence Cole, that fat clown from Texas, man that guy is just corrupt, and incompetent, why hasn't he been fired, or had his license revoked.yet??:huh I haven't seen Jay Nady for awhile, is he still around? i wasn't to fond of him either...
