Yes, I watched the fight, and Hopkins was obviously after his 60% cut. You think it was a coincidence that after his "injury" he would go after Jones with everything he had in an attempt to knock him out? Hopkins is a 45 year old non puncher. What better way is there to knock out a guy who clearly has chin problems than the dirty tactics that he was using. Did he embarass himself, yes, but did he look bad. No. He managed to completely shut Jones down by standing right in front of him, feinting, and occasionaly throwing punches. Hopkins has had stamina problems since Calzaghe. That is evident, but the skill is still there. If Dawson thinks Hopkins will be easy, he's in for a long night. He never fought anybody like Hopkins before.
I'm happy to own up if I said something untrue/wrong, but, honestly, I wouldn't even consider Mendoza a mediocre puncher. If he is a mediocre puncher, there's a hell of a lot of mediocre punchers out there! He's just not good enough to land effectively/flush on a good fighter, and when he does, he doesn't have enough power to put an average-chinned opponent in big trouble. Would you disagree? Would you say Dawson's chin was proven? I know Diaconu is derided these days, and rightly so, but back in the day, he was seen as more of a puncher than guys like Mendoza and Adamek, including by me.
If it pleases you, I'll admit that I am/was wrong, but I still don't consider Mendoza a mediocre puncher. He's just not good enough and he's not enough of a puncher either. But maybe I'm wrong. Do you think he is good enough and enough of a puncher to be considered a mediocre puncher? I consider someone like Diaconu a mediocre puncher.
