I understand resume! I love Charles and he is my #1 ATG LHW...But I have never seen him ranked in the top 10 on serious lists for HW...I don't mean that disrespectfully as you seem to have a serious desire for the fight game and understanding its fighters and history...I just don't see him inside the top 15 let alone the top 10....

Oh well I guess we will have to agree to disagree!

ESB Classic did a HW Poll:
    http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=156253

Only one person ranked Charles in the top 10 (#5), out of 81 people...either you are seeing something the rest of are not or????

No on an atg list he's about 17 on mine.

This is just taking into account resume. He beat 20+ top ten guys and just taking into account a mans resume and nothing else I don't think many heavyweights have a better resume.

Based on the criteria required in this thread, theres no way Frazier and Foreman are above Lewis

I was pondering the inclusion of langford myself but I haven't studied his resume to my satisfaction yet. Something i'll do tomorrow hopefully.

you know, i should do more research myself but his win loss record against some legitimate greats is pretty solid. it's got a degree of depth that many of the list (upon reflection) may lack. then again, i'm not janitor or mcgrain so who knows:rasta

I'm quite confident he'll make the cut when I look deeper into it by considering names and when his prime ended etc.

I have looked at his resume once before but to keep in line with my latest research I have to check it out again.

Yeah some really respectable posters on here, I mean I think i've learnt loads over the last few month then they come out with info that still surprises me. Good men to have on the forum.

you can argue louis being ranked over ali in an all-time list if you want but louis' resume is not better than ali's. that is very clear. holyfield should be high on this list.

Im a big Ali man and i do agree with you but i think in the interest of fair play and all that, that it was pointed out on another thread here (i think)that Louis actually fought more top 10 rated guys than Ali. A man can only fight the best of whoevers around.

The emphasis on resume favours a number of old time fighters, who it might be hard to guage head to head.

John L Sullivan-There is no film of him or anybody he fought in his prime. The only thing we can categoricaly say about his efficacy head to head, is that he was devastating against the fighters of his own era. In terms of resume however, he is among the most dominant heavyweight champions of any era. Not only that but he was able to dominate under unfamiliar rulesets, and even when he was disipated by alcoholism and had lost most of the mobility in his left arm.

Jim Jeffries-I think it is prety fair to say that people are divided on how he would fare against fighters from later eras. Some people think that he would beat Joe Louis, while others think that he would probably loose to Tonny Tubbs. In terms of resume, he was fighting and beating the best heavyweights i the world earlier and with less fights than any other champion in history. Despite questions about his opposition, most people would agree that he has the best title reign of any heavyweight champion before Joe Louis.

Sam Langford-His size alone is enough to prompt many people to question how he would have fared against champions from later eras. If you judge him just on his heavyweight resume however, you might end up coming to some surprizing conclusions. He beat most of the heavyweights of his era who were worth beating, and usualy beat them multiple times. He might just have as many wins over world class opponents as any heavyweight in history. Also some notice would have to be taken of the way he was beating them, which was often by brutal knockout.

I agree with a lot of what you say here. Just curious on what you say about sullivan, considering the variety of reports on him how do you choose the difference between what you perceive as fact or fiction?

It is obviously verry hard to be sure, but if you cross refference multiple reports then you can get a prety good idea of his style, strengths and weaknesses.

I produced a detailed breakdown of his style based on contemporary reports, but I was still left with a phantom.

With regard to what actualy heppened in his fights, you have to read the local reports written by people who were there on the day, and compare as many as you can. There will still be contradictions, but you get a prety good idea of what happened.
