How sure are you about his reign over the division in terms of cleaning out?

Obviously he never fought godfrey or jackson but was there any other significant omissions or are you satisfied he fought the rest?

I do not make much of an issue of contenders that he did not meet after the Killrain fight, because he had formaly anounced his retirment.

Even on that basis, there are a few other significant contenders he did not fight. In some cases the reluctance was more on their side than his.

Marciano being undefeated speaks strongly for his half. Remember this is based on achievement.

Floyd was linear champion twice. 3 + 2 years.

:thinkinteresting and a different way of looking at it. you used strict achievement, in which case your criteria fits. i was looking at it more as a resume of the fighters and their respective ability at the time they fought. marciano and floyd do fit highly based on achievement though

Marciano should be rank over say Holmes imo for cleaning out his own era, something Larry didnt do imo.

true but larry did what he could with the competition he had. i give it to holmes for longevity and consistency, he beat far more 10 than rocky for instance

true but also louis had more fights than ali. both fighters lost four years of their primes due to wars. kind of amazing that these fighters are regarded as the two best heavys and they have this chunk of time cut from both their careers.

Yes, if you're looking at resume and Fighter X defeated the No. 2, 3 and 4 contenders in an incredibly weak era, does that mean he's equal to a guy who did the exact same thing when there were future ATGs occupying those spots?

*Holmes would be #4, if he'd got the decision against WBC champion McCall in '95, which i thought he deserved.
