Aye. I remember watching a documentary on the 100 metres and (i think) it was Tim Montgomery who pointed out that when an athlete gets caught, their rivals rather than point out what a disgrace they are, tend to say nothing...I wonder why? Also, I've read numerous football books about the history of the game (across the world) and it virtually every one, players talk about stuff they used to take and not question what they were- example Ajax in the 1970s hired a fitness guy (Rolink i think his name) was who was previously involved in cycling, who used to give them 'pep pills'. One player- Barry Hulsoff' said "I used run around as strong as a horse- and I hadn't even touched the ball" Also, it's nearly 25 years since Jim Courier said "tennis has an EPO problem"...it turns out that going on a 'Gluten-free diet' OR having multiple injuries most of the season is much better for being at the top.
I used to read World Soccer magazine and in 1994 they had an issue about the problems with drugs in the game and historical case studies and how the authorities just brush it under the carpet- and how much worse it will get- and this was nearly 30 years ago!
I've heard about the pep pills haha. Maradona said they were given "speedy coffee" before the world cup which made them faster. I know that endurance athletes pretending to have asthma is also a thing. It allows them to get away with using bronchodillators, which in regular doses don't do much but in larger doses can be used as a PED, like Salbutamol which is very popular for this purpose. Cycling is a very funny one. Most people don't know this but Lance Armstrong wasn't the only person to have been discovered doping. They just pretended that was the case so they could use him as a sacrificial lamb and deflect from the sport as a whole. Every single Tour de France from 1999 through to 2005 are officially declared as without winners due to 87% of the top-10 finishers (61 of 70) being confirmed dopers. If you extend this from 1998-2013, 75% of the TdF winners were confirmed dopers, with 65% of Top 10 finishers being confirmed or highly suspected dopers. Jacques Anquetil, the first 5x winner of the TdF openly admitted that he used amphetamines and said only a fool would think you could do a grand tour without "help." I forget what year it was but cyclers on the tour were on such a ridiculous cocktail of drugs that it made their resting heart rates so low that they were dying in their sleep. They had to start sleep with heart monitors on so am alarm would go off if if was dangerously low. You weren't even banned from testing positive for the 1960's to the 1980's, yet once again people tell me that I'm just being cynical and that it's just a couple of bad eggs there are entire Olympic finals where everyone tested positive for goodness sake.
