Fullmer's record is a lot more solid and rounded than many realize. GGG has all those defenses but he was a part titlist for ages and the division wasn't as strong as it was in Fullmer's time. Once he hit his straps Gene only ever lost to SRR and Tiger who were ATG middleweights. Interesting debate. Fullmer would be top 25 you'd think.....where does one have GGG? H2H i'd favor GGG's better skills backed by big power. It would be a fascinating matchup.
Fullmer couldn't hold Golovkin's jock. The guy got some homecooking and lenient West Coast refs. I don't intend to demean him but he was extremely limited whereas GGG is/was dynamic.
GGG, he is winning into his 40's, Gene Fullmer though talented could not continue his wins as another talented poster stated, he was flattened by an old Sugar Ray Robinson on May 1 1957 in round 5, what a left hook thrown by Robinson, Aye Caramba.
It's really a matter of weighing some good wins against the metronomic consistency over good, but lesser, opposition that has been GGG's career. I just watched some Fullmer clips to refresh my memory. I remembered him as a somewhat wild brawler, but against Tiger and Basilio he did a pretty good job boxing. While he's better than I recall I still think Golovkin is a step ahead technically. I'd put Golovkin ahead of Fullmer but I get that there is an argument for Gene as well.
To summarize, Fullmer beat: Ralphy "Tiger" Jones Sugar Ray Robinson Carmen Basilio Gil Turner Florentino Fernandez Rocky Castellani Paul Pender Joe Miceli Wilf Greaves Benny "Kid" Paret Spider Webb GGG Beat: Willie Monroe Jr. Daniel Jacobs Curtis Stevens David Lemeuix Gabriel Rosado Martin Murray Kassim Ouma Kell Brook Nabuhiro Ishida
Uh, I don't know about that, GGG being stronger. Fulmer was a brute of a man and one of, if not the strongest middleweights ever. If Golovkin can't really hurt Fulmer I'd take Gene by a brutal 15 round close decision.
I believe Hank is doing just that...picking golden blueberries on a golden pond somewhere in the sweet hereafter. Of course, he might be in the other place.
Fullmer with of a doubt. Outside of canelo ggg just doesn't have the names on his CV and compared to fullmer his resume is down right bad. I mean how can you even compare lemuex, devrienchenco and Jacobs to Robinson, paret and basilio.
Its absurd how underrated GGG is by many .. he was a big time puncher, super strong, well conditioned, an iron chin, very smart and very decent skills .. he was a top ten guy to me ..
