Really tough one to call. They both have accomplished so much. They both have done great in different things. Couture- 3x HW champion, 2x LHW champion. Great resume. ATG & future HOF'er. GSP- Surpassed Matt Hughes as the best 170 lber, Has made more successful defenses than Couture. Great resume. ATG & future HOF'er. To tough to call. They are both great in different area's.
Is close now, but I think if GSP fights for a few more years and moves up to 185 then he will comfortably surpass randy. I would have GSP ahead now as it is.
Champion or not, I think the main difference lies in the fact that GSP is without a doubt the #1 170lber in the world. During Couture's peak Pride was successful enough to raise serious doubts as to whether his championship in the UFC labeled him the #1 HW or LHW in the world (as in, he probably wasn't). Nogueira beating him (even both past their primes) hurts him even more on this level. Couture is an ATG and future HOFer no doubt but except for the EAAAARLY days there was always a good argument that his title didn't reflect that of the best LHW or HW in the world. GSP is the best ever at his weight division while Couture was great in 2 divisions. GOAT at 170 is more to me than top 5 all time in 2 divisions (which is still arguable).
Could go either way but Couture being Champion multiple times in multiple weight classes gives him a slight edge IMO. GSP has never really had to face anyone bigger then him in fact hes beat many guys who are smaller then him. Couture dominated 205 for a period of time and has beat some or dominated some of the top Heavyweights as well and of course was Champion 3 times. Couture was never the worlds best Heavyweight but in 03-04 the wins over Liddell, Belfort, Tito IMO proved he was either on the level of Wanderlei Silva or above him at the least.
Prime p4p h2h ability? Pierre by a lot. Resume as of right now? Pierre by a little (wouldn't argue with Couture by a little).
I'm sorry but Couture has always been overrated, I always said and always will. He is very good but greatness has GOT to be measured in some type of consistency, he just isn't. He's the guy who can always give anyone run for their money but he was never dominant. Kind of like Hendo I suppose?
10 times Couture entered the Octogan and was beat by another man. That fact says alot and cannot be ignored.
Where's wentz to deprogram us Zuffa zombies by informing us what equally overrated bums they are? :think
The only real argument for Randy is based on things outside of actually fighting, being a face for the sport and sort of transcending into popular culture at large. In terms of being an MMA fighter, it is clearly GSP.
